One of the original Oakwood Park log homes went up in flames Just before 5 p.m. Tuesday. Huron County OPP, Dashwood Fire Department and Grand Bend Fire Department responded to the fire located on Lake Shore Drive in this gated community. Officers arrived to find a fully engulfed cottage fire. The cottage was unoccupied at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental in nature. The total value of the losses sustained is unknown at this point. Originally owned by Fred George Mitchell, Claude D. Kent and the Vera and Wesley Thurston resulted in the name'Thurstonia: The cottage had a fire in 1928 and some time later a smaller cottage was built on the east half of the lot. Dean Robinson wrote in "75 years of Oakwood 1922-1997, "The Thurston situation, (two dwellings on one property) created a water problem. Specifically there was no longer enough room between the well and the septic tank for a safe water supply. When the Thurston well became polluted, Frederick Walker, owner of the Park at the time put down another well, on the road allowance and offered to let the Thurstons tap into it. The Thurstons wanted to buy the property that contained the new well but Walker, incensed by their erection of a second building was not eager to sell. He was reported to have said to Thurston that he was prepared to grant him title to that property if he could convince him it was a good idea, "but you have to convince me first," he said. The standoff lasted Pieq In MM NM 1920s more than two decades. Walker later added a covenant to the deeds that prevented property owners from constructing two dwellings on the same lot. Dr. Hugh Barr bought the property and sold it to his daughter Brenda Barr and Bob McFarlane five years ago.
