1 A new sign by-law passed
®at the October 3 Lambton
Shores council meeting will
regulate the placement
throughout the municipality.
It was reported that three
of the five former municipali-
ties, now part of Lambton
Shores, had by-laws that reg-
ulated the placement of sig-
nage and advertising devices.
The by-laws provide details
on where, and when signs
can be erected, and in some
instances, dictates the size,
type or style of sign.
Lambton Shores clerk
Carol McKenzie says
regulations are necessary as
signs can create a distraction
to the traveling public or
cause dangerous sight dis-
tance problems at intersec-
tions and driveway
approaches. "Signs can also
obscure directional and regu-
latory highway signage, also
causing a potential hazard to
motorists," she says adding a
plethora of signs can become
unsightly, and therefore the
by-laws recognize that while
signage is an important
aspect of a business opera-
tion, the goal is to encourage
the enhancement of the
physical appearance of the
municipality.
"There are instances when
signage is erected without
permission and not in com-
pliance with the regulations
In the by-laws. 'Ibis Issue has
been discussed with the
municipal solicitor, and it was
noted that currently, council
does not have a policy direc-
tive on the removal of signs
that do not adhere to the sign
by-laws; said McKenzie. She
saki it was suggested that this
be bone to provide clear
direction to staff, and to
ensure that all signs are
treated equitably.
The clerk suggested, as
time permits, it would he
beneficial for the sign by-laws
to be updated, to encompass
the entire municipality, and
to take into consideration any
unique characteristics of
each of the areas, and incor-
porate recommendations
from recent documents, such
as the Community Improve-
ment P111115.
The by-law states In part,
"...A person may not place a
sign on a municipal road,
right of wiry or other property
unless authorized by the
municipality, and approved
in accordance with the provi-
sions of the appropriate sign
by-law.
Signs found on municipal
lands without permission will

With recycled metals, artist Bill Claw-
son creates what he calls "New Begin-
nings': As the commissioned artist for
the new Huron Woods clubhouse in a
Grand Bend subdivision, Clawson said
his work is only as good as the people
he works with and he says he had solid,

Since 1979 he has been exhibiting in

work since she knew the Huron Woods
Association was looking for a special
'` sculpture for their new building.
