and selling 200 cupcakes in a
day.
Kristy Nicholson, 22, at uni-
versity in London, has taught
private art classes and been
commissioned for her
paintings.
All three know what it's like
to run a successful business
venture thanks to the student
summer company program at
the local Business Enterprise
Centre.
McCulloch, Card and
Nicholson were among eight
recognized at a banquet 'Ihetrs-
day for their achievements.
McCulloch could have casu-
ally mowmi lawns for the sum-
mer but instead he applied to
the program for financial sup-
port and the chance to learn
about marketing.
By the end of the summer,
the Grade 12 student at North
Lambton Secondary School
was regularly mowing 15 lawns,
gardening, landscaping and
making lots of money.
1 was able to purchase new
equipment, including a riding
lawn mower, that I can use for
my business next year," he said.
The government-spon-
sored program provided him
with a mentor as well as
nearly $1,500 in start-up
money. Since he successfully
ran "The Lawn Barber" all
summer, he will receive
another $1,500 this month.
Card, a student in the child
and youth program at
Lampton College, knew she
had a knack for baking.
She spent the summer bak-
ing cupcakes and selling them
at the (;rand Bend ilea market
for $2 each or six for $10.

She used Facebook and Kijiji
to advertise and had orders for
her "Cupcake Boutique" from
as far away as'lbronto.
Nicholson is an accom-
plished artist and already had a
job offer for the summer when
she decided to apply to the
summer company progrun.
"1 ended up making the
same money and received
experience demonstrating
entrepreneurial skills" she said.
"It looks good on a resume,"
Her "One of a Kind Artistry"
offered caricatures for $10 each
at area festivals.
While at events like Artwalk,
Ribfest and Captain Kidd Days,
she met customers who hired
her to do commissioned pieces
avid teach.
"At the end of the summer, 1
had my own art show," she
said.
The summer company
program targets people aged 15
to 29 who have a business idea.
It's co-ordinated by the Busi-
ness Enterprise Centre (BEC) of
San>ia-La nbton in conjunction
with the Ministry of Economic
Development and Trade.
This year, 45 students
applied and eight were
approved, said co-ordinator
Matthew Slotwinski.
Thursday's banquet also
honoured the six finalists in the
BEC's high school business
plan competition.

iano Corbo of OLG Point
Edward, chose the top six win-
ners from 41 business plans.
This year's winners are
First place and $1,000 to
Olivia Kraft; second place
and $500 to Jessica Leduc;
third place and $400 to Con-
nor Smith; fourth place and
$300 to Kali Basset; fifth place
and $200 to Robyn Bocxek;
and sixth place and $100 to
Anbareen and Zareen Aheer.
