Lakeshore Advance, 2011-10-05, Page 4Wednesday, October 5, 2011 • Lakeshore Advance 3 Lambton Shores Communities in Bloom receives special Centennial community grant from Union Gas Funds will help to plant native tree species at the newly renovated Legacy recreation Centre OMI Agency Lambton Shores Communities in Bloom has been awarded a $1,000 Centennial Community Grant from Union Gas to support its 2011 Native Tree Project and planting of native tree species at the Legacy Recreation Centre in 'Ihedford. Union Gas is celebrating 100 years Of delivering safe, reliable and affordable service to custom- ers and communities across Ontario in 2011. This award is one of 1(X) Centennial grants of $1,000 each that Union Gas is giving out to support charitable projects focused on the environment, community safety and education acrosss the prviru'e. "Our success as one of North America's premier natural gas stor- age, transmission and distribution companies is shared with the com- munities we serve and we can't think of a better way to mark this occasion than by giving back to u community program that so closely aligns with these business values. As part of the 2011 goals and objectives, the Communities in Bloom Committee identified the need increase tree coverage in l xuubton Shores, specifically iticalty fo us- ing on native tree species. A tree sub-conunittet' was established to develop a native tree brochure and community outreach program. Local nurseries got on board by offering discounted rates on three selected native tree species -Red Maple, Kentucky Coffee Tree and Lamtilon Shores The Community Services Department staff planting the trees are Cody George and Gerald Van Grinsven. Tulip 'free. This program has been a resounding suc- cess and will be continued in the future. By planting native trees, eve are not only replenishing tree cover due to trees lost from disease, but we are also educating the public on these impor- tant species. "Thanks to Union Gas Centennial Grant, Lamb - ton Shores Communities in Bloom will he planting native species trees at our new Legacy Centre in Thedford," said Ruth Ill - man, Lambton Shores Councillor Ward 4 and Communities in Bloom member. "We are thrilled to announce yet another native tree project that will enhance our tree can- opy, educate our commu- nity about the importance of our green spaces, and ultimately provide shade to the Legacy Centre's nursery school children and library patrons." This project is one of nine in I,anlbton Shores for 2(1 1 1 . Other projects include: Bosanyuet School Tree planting, Grand bend Public School/(gaud bend 1lortitultural Society, For- est Agricultural Society and Forst Foundation partner- ship program, Forest Kiwanis project, Cynthia Cook's St. (:lair Conserva- tion project, and John Cook and the Forest Cliff Camp tree planting. About Communities in Bloom Celebrating its 17th edi- tion in 2011, Communities in Bloom (CiB) is a Cana- dian non-profit organiza- tion committed to fostering civic pride, environmental responsibility and beautifi- cation through community involvement and the chal- lenge of a national pro- gram, with focus on the promotion of green spaces in community settings. Lambton Shores has participated in the pro- vincial edition of the pro- gram since 2008, and in 2()11 is participating in the National Edition.
