EMS crews eye new posts
Cheryl Huth
QM! Agency
The County of !heron's
Emergency Services
department is preparing to
set up posts in two new
spots but the move did not
come without some debate
at the county's Sept. 21
committee -of -the -whole
session in Clinton.
In presenting a detailed
report, EMS Chief Dave Lew
is recommending setting up
two new bases, one at the
intersection of I Iighways 21
and 84, at the county's south
end, and another at the new
Blyth tech building at the
firefighter training centre on
County !toad No. 25.
'l'he proposal proved to
spark committee chairman
Ioe Stefiler (11uron East) to
vacate his seat so he could
question the change.

The response
time is key. The
issue for us is
if it's a priority
call, we want the
closest vehicle."
— EMS Chief Dave Lew
In noting the EMS already
has posts in Exeter and
Grand Bend, Steffler
questioned the wisdom
behind setting up another
site in the south end when
there appears to be a "dark
hole" for coverage in I lowick
Township, at the north end
of Huron County. Further,
Steffler asked for a
comprehensive report on
cross-border billing between
counties for ambulance
service before any decision
is made for a new post at the
proposed 1 Iwy. 21 location.
In responding to Steffler's
concerns, Lew notes the
cross-border billing issue
has been reviewed as has
coverage issues in Howick,
where there were only 55
priority calls in 12 months,

40 of which were responded
to by Wellington County's
EMS crews.
"The response time is
key," says Lew. "The issue
for us is if it's a priority call,
we want the closest
vehicle."
While Steffler suggested
holding off on the I lighway
21 base until further
information is available,
councillors ultimately opted
to approve Lew's
recommendations as
presented.
Councillors also
participated in a lengthy
debate about the value of
the C011llty's recently
introduced Rapid Response
Units, which Coun. George
Robertson (South heron),
among others, questioned
the value of given they
cannot be used to transport
people to hospital.
Lew note's that in
acCOrdance lvitll nt'w
provincial standards, the
Rapid Response Units make
sense given they have so far
telt response time in half
and can be used to stabilize
patients until an ambulance
arrives.
Rent !likes
Tenants of the county's
Highland and heartland
apartments can expect to
see a 3 per cent rent hike in
2012, thanks to a motion
approved by councillors at
the September committee -
of -the -whole session.
In other homes news,
councillors learned tenants
of the Iluronlea residence in
Brussels are unimpressed
by new security changes to
the site as mandated by the
province.
Homes administrator
Barb Springall reports the
changes were instituted on
the heels of a recent
inspector's visit though the
site was constructed
according to ministry
standards,
"The Inspector says all
parts of the home should be
secured," says Springall,
adding that though the
findings can be appealed, it
is likely that the Homes'
workers and residents will
have to find ways to work
with the change.
New Sign
Huronlea will soon be
home to a new sign at a cost
of about $11,000, thanks to a
motion approved by
councillors.
The project will move
forward once county council
endorses the motion.
