Remember to drive
safely around school
buses and their
precious cargo: our
children.
OPP are reminding motorists that as
of Tuesday morning, Ontario roadways
will again be dotted with thousands of
school buses returning to school. After
the long sununer vacation, it's impor-
tant for motorists to remember to drive
safely around school buses and their
precious cargo: our children.
When motorists see a school bus
stopped on the roadway with its red
lights activated and "Stop" sign out, they
must conte to a complete stop in -front
of and /or behind the bus, Motorists
must not pass the stopped bus until the
stop aril is retracted and the red lights
are turned off. The tine for passing a
school bus is $490.00. Liability to failing
to stop for school bus rests on the
owner Of the vehicle.
Motorists trust also slow down in
School Safety Zones and be prepared to
stop for crossing guards. Police will be
extra vigilant 'Tuesday morning to
ensure drivers obey School Bus opera-
tors and school crossing guards across
the region.
"Passing a stopped school bus 011 the
roadway with the red lights on and the
stop arm activated is a dangerous act
with severe consequences. Caution
must always be exercised by motorists
when around school buses, parked,
stopped or otherwise," says West Region
OPP 'Traffic and Marine Inspector
Wayne Burke.
OPP remind caregivers to speak to
their children about the importance of
getting on and off buses safely and obey-
ing bus and road safety rules at all times.
'licking a few minutes to talk to your chil-
dren about safety can he the difference
between life and death. It's worth the
time.
'this is a hectic time for kids, parents,
teachers and also for anyone that com-
mutes to and from work. Remember to
leave more time for your drive to work
as you may encounter school buses
along your route. dere are some things
you should review with the children
before they venture off to school.
Cyclists under the age of 18 are
required by law to wear a properly fit-
ting and fastened bike helmet. Cyclists
must obey the sante rules of the road-
way that other vehicles do. Remind chil-
dren to keep their eyes and ears open as
sometimes vehicle drivers don't see
children on bicycles.
Pedestrians should use sidewalks
where possible and where there are
none, walk as far off onto the shoulder
of the roadway as possible facing traffic.
Both pedestrians and cyclists should
snake use of the crossing guards who
will be returning to their posts to help
our children get safely across the
streets.
