The Port Franks Beach homeowners' Association, the Windsor Park Association, and the Ausable Bayfield Conser- vation Authority (ABCA), with the support of Municipality of Lambton Shores, are cooperating on an effort to control Phragmites australis (common reed) in the Port Franks and surrounding conununity. The beach associations and the ABCA have met with Phragmites experts and are proposing demonstration pilot control projects this autumn on the Port Franks Beach and a small Island near the mouth of the Ausable River. A public meeting Is scheduled for Tuesday, August 30 at 7 p.m., in the large meeting room of the Port Franks Commu- nity Centre, at 9997 Port Franks Road, and will provide infor- mation on the distribution of Phragmites, the impact on the community and ecosystem, and control methods. Invasive Phragmites grows in dense stands that crowd out native vegetation and wildlife. Stands of Phragmites are composed of a high percentage of dead stems, with a low percentage of growth. The stems decompose very slowly which results in a high proportion of dead stems which are dry and combustible, increasing the risk of fires. Control methods vary with site characteristics and local by-law restrictions and regulations. If not done property, the well -Intentioned control work can increase the density and spread of the targeted stand. The work at two sites in Port Franks this autumn will demonstrate the methods of control, but agency spokesper- sons say a comprehensive community strategy is needed, "We need to ensure that the most cost-effective measures an' taken and the spread of the invasive species is stopped," said Kate Monk, ABCA Supervisor of Stewardship and Conserva- tion Lands. Topics at the August 30 meeting include: locations of Phragmites in Port Franks; impact of Phragmites on commu- nity and ecosystem; options for Phragmites control; Phrag- mites demonstration pilot projects proposed for Autumn, 2011; landowner experience with Phragmites control; and questions -and -answers with an expert panel. Phragmites australis is invading the riverbanks, wetlands, eoadslde ditches, islands and beaches in Lambton Shores, Jspecially Port Franks. But there is hope, according to meet- ing organizers. "Phragmites control methods underway in other parts of Ontario could work in our community," Monk said. For more information about the meeting, please call Nancy Vidler at 519-243-2562.
