As a teacher of a grade 13 class,
Bruce Shaw was attempting to explain
the importance of being involved in
community. One student asked him
what he did. It was at that moment that
Shaw realized the bowling and Sunday
school teaching might not cut it - and
he has never looked back.
Shaw has been nominated for the
2011 Ontario Medal for Good Citizen-
ship. South Huron councillor 'Tont
'fosses made a resolution to that
council to nominate Shaw and so the
process began with their unanimous
nod.
The award honours people who have
made outstanding contributions to
their communities over the years. And
if anyone has done that -it is surely
Shaw.
In 1968, when Shaw was just in his
mid 20s he decided to run for political
office. He had been teaching for three
years. So, he ran and he won. During
that time, the former South Huron
Association for the Mentally Retarded
(now Community Living) was looking

for a new building and Shaw became
campaign chair for the building
fundraising. "'that opened my eyes for
community and being involved," he
said. Ile then helped to start the Big
Brothers and Sisters in the area, and

then he Joined the lions Club and began canvassing for
every cause that came his way.
When he became principal of South Huron high he
noticed kids who were falling through the cracks due to
family issues. The students did not qualify for welfare but
needed to leave their home base. With the help of Exeter's
United and Anglican churches Safe Home for Youth began
with families taking on youth at their own expense. This
program, initiated by Shaw, is now provincially funded with
a home base in Goderich.
When Shaw was principal in Seaforth he decided he
would run for mayor in Exeter. His students wondered how
he could be a principal in one town and a mayor in another.
Ile explained he would be principal by day and mayor by
night. Ile won that post and the following day his students
had a banner displayed that rend "Night mayor of Exeter."
He would hold the title of mayor for 18 -years. During that
time he would also hold principal posts in Goderich, Exeter
and Seaforth. Shaw was also instrumental in the creation of
the Exeter Villa more than 25 -years ago.
Shaw coached sports, was the first president of the Ileart
and Stroke Foundation in Exeter, he was a United Way vol-
unteer and was the chair of the Ontario Secondary School
principal's council.
'Ihis was also while being dad to Bruce (who is now a Bay
Street Trader) and Dave (former NH1, and now in Boston
working with the Bruins).
Today Shaw is the executive director of Community living
South Huron and Volunteer Executive Director of Big
Brothers and Sisters South Iluron. Ile is South I luron Hos-
