Excerpts From Our History Book
Written By: Pat & Max Morden
"Imagine fr)r a moment living in Huron County
in the' mid -nineteenth century.
Your cabin is
surrounded by
thick firest. Each
acre' of cleared
land takes months
of back -breaking
labour. The roads
are muddy tracks,
often passable only
in the winter..."
"I f the use of phones
in Zurich itself was
revolutionary, imagine
what it must have
meant to have service
on firms. Suddenly the
doctor, the fire brigade, family
members, neighbours and
suppliers were just a call away..."

Coastal report for dune grass does
not go far enough says councilor
Lynda Hillman -Replay
Lakeshore Advance
On June 16, representatives
of council, municipal staff and
members of The I.ake Huron
Centre for Coastal Conserva-
tion stet to discuss the
improvements to the Lambton
Shores Beach Management
practices. More particular
sand management as it relates
to the current design and the
rip currents occurring at the
pier and the dangerous condi-
tions they present to the gen-
eral public.
highlighted recommenda-
tions from the Coastal Centre
were discussed at the August 8
regular council meeting. Dep-
uty Elizabeth Davis Dagg said
there were strong voices for
and against the dune grass in
Grand Bend and she wants to
make sure whatever is decided
is done with public. input.
Councilor Dave Maguire said
this report is only part of what
he had intended when he
asked for a staff report. Ile
would like to see the rest of a
report with details regarding
the dune grass in front of the
beach house - as his plan was
to have that moved. "We don't
want to shoot ourselves in the
foot here," said Councilor Mar-
tin Underwood," Let's do this
right. Let's get the second part
including costs, of this report"
The report council received
from the Coastal Centre last
week included:
Creation of a Rip Current

Let s do this
right. Let's get the
second part including
costs, of this report."

Awareness Program: A pro-
gram would assist the gen-
eral public in becoming more
aware of the area and the dan-
gers of swimming in areas
which are prone to strong rip
currents. It was also recom-
mended that a planting of
native grasses may assist in
minimizing sand movement.
Native Plant Gardens: The
Coastal Centre is recommend-
ing that the Marram
Grass, which was purchased
from the Pinery Park, be aug-
mented to include other types
of native grasses such as Long
Leaved Reeds, and Little Blue
Stem. Greenhouses through-
out Lambton Shores readily
have these plants available.
These costs could be included
within the 2012 operating
budget. Staff are also review-
ing various partnerships for
the planting and maintaining
of these areas.
Beach Plots: In general
these plots relate to the dune
grass areas that are
located through -out the beach
west of the beach house. I)ue
to the shallowness of the plant-
ing these plants have been
unable to thrive. The Coast(''
Centre is recontntendin, ,
the planting program continue
with their assistance. Staff
would like to ask the local pub-
lic school for assistance in this
planting program.
The Coastal Centre also
commented that to provide
protection to the investment of
the Beach improvements such
as the boardwalk, retaining the
Dune Grass is an impor-
tant instrument for this.
Armour Stones: The
armour stone in mentioned
are located between the dune
gardens and the water. They
were originally designed to
frame the dunes themselves
but it is believed these may
become a bit of a hazard once
sand begins to collect over
top of them. Staff would like to
remove the stones from the
inside of the dunes as these
are already beginning to
become buried. The armour
stone, along with the snow
fence which is scheduled to he
removed next spring, have
assisted in protecting the
fledging dune plots. During
the recent volleyball tourna-
ment participants and observ-
ers used these areas as seats to
watch the games. Preliminary
estimates to remove the
armour stone is approximately
$30,000.00.
Lambton Shores and Rotary launch
new Grand Bend beach website
QMI Agency
A new beach website www.
thegrandbendbeach.cont is
being introduced as another
co-operative effort between the
Grand Bend Rotary Club and
the Municipaiity of Lambton
Shores. It is meant to give both
local residents and visitors
general information about the
(;rand Bend Beach as well as
water and weather conditions.
this website results after dis-
cussions between Rotary's
Clean Water Now committee
and the municipality of Lamb -
ton Shores. Rotary offered to
construct the website and then
turn it over to Lambton Shores
who will maintain and update
the ongoing information. Also
it is planned to enhance and
add more features and infor-
mation to the site in the near
future.
The website was constructed
by Jason Penlbleton of 'Toronto
who also built Rotary's www.
autumnindulgence.conl web-
site. Also the plain menu con-
tains photography provided by
local artist, David Bannister as
well as a welwam shot courtesy
of the (rand Bend Yacht club.

reports the latest lake wa

takes several days to get the
water sample test results back
from the lab, this can not be lot

Lambton Shores is presently
studying and compiling info(
