The pellets, less than half a centi- metre in size, washed in during a storm. The plastic (resin) pellets are the raw materials used to created plas- tic products when melted and molded. This wasn't the first time plastic pel- lets were observed washing up on Huron beaches. There were occur- rences recorded in 2008, 2007, 2004 and anecdotal reports of occurrences prior to that, The sourer of the pellets has been difficult to track down, The wide distribution along lake 1luron beaches wants 10 point towards It ship -based d spill, The lake I lutein Centre for Coastal Conservation (Coastal Centre) brought the issue to the foreftont alter it identified the extent oldie 201(1 inci- dent to It 20-kil0111ette SW111h of l,ttkr 1 damn lwaches, Researchers from the University of Western Ontario analyzed pel- lets from last year and compared them with pellets they retrieved tt 2008. The County of Lambton has contracted the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority to conduct larval surveillance and apply larvi- cide to municipal catch basins under the Ministry of Environment 11trviciding permit number 1874- 811'1'P211, Alethoprene (Altosid) in two years, indicating that the pel- lets were from two separate inci- dences. Analysis from the plastic manufacturing industry suggested that the pellets washing onto beaches were not of North Ameri- can origin. Multi-year recurrences of pellets washing ashore is a concern to organi- zations like the Coastal Centre. "Plas- tic pellets don't belong 00 our beaches, and they pose a potential hazatti to fish hitt wildlife;' said Geoff Peach, Coastal Resources Manager for the Centre. "While the issue has not been resolved yet, we're encouraged that the Mllnistry of the Environment pellet formulation (Pest Control Products Act number 21809) will lw placed 1n the catch basins.
