Committee to review speed limits
Cheryl Heath
Huron County's civil engineering
technologist has been sent back to the
ding board after once again
p,tting proposed speed limit zones
thaf proved to provoke concern at
Huron County's June 8 committee -of -
the -whole session.
In presenting the report, Mike Alcock
says part of the problem with speed
limit signage is either staff or residents
continually move them from their
original locations.
One of the biggest concerns with the
latest speed limit draft was the speed
zone plan for the Crediton area, which
Coun. line Dietrich (South Iluron)
suggests should be spaced further out
given there are children in the area.
Alcock says while that factor was
considered, there is a concern about
the possible negative ramifications of
posting a speed limit that is "too low."
"i don't like the idea of a 90 going
down to 50, it should be 90 to 70 to 50,"
says Coun. Joe Steffler (Iluron East).
Alcock notes while that was
discussed with speed zone committee
members, county staff, "followed the
direction we were given."
Meanwhile, Coun. lames Ginn
(Central Huron) expressed concern
with the possible costs associated with
a countywide reassignment of speed
Ihnit signs, which public works director
Dave Laurie acknowledged would be a
project with an approximate $50,000
price tag.
in the end, Alcock was directed to
bring the report back to the committee
for further tweaking.

Moving Ahead
'levo erosion control projects are a
step closer to moving forward thanks to
a motion to accept the bid of about
$79,000 from Lavis Contracting Co. for
projects at Forrester's and Varna
bridges.
County Council must endorse the
motion before the projects move
ahead.
Their Business
The I luron Small Business Enterprise
Centre is keeping its eye on small
businesses.
in their annual report to county
councillors, Alison Lobb and Carol
Leeming reported on another success-
ful year for the centre, which is a joint
venture of the Ministry of Economic
Development and Trade, the Ministry
of Training, Colleges and Universities,
and the County of I luron. It also has a
number of sponsors and stakeholders,
including the Huron Business
Development Corporation and the
Iluron Manufacturing Association.
The centre's ultimate role, says Lobb,
is to "act more as a sounding board and
encourage (entrepreneurs) to find their
own solutions"
And, says Lobb, most people who
come to the centre for assistance are in
the start-up phase and are looking to
create a business plan.
Other programs and workshops
provided through the centre include an
increasingly popular business seminar
series, the Huron Women In Network-
ing dinners, and a youth enterprise
program that has trained 54 students
since 2001. Thanks to the program,
students have the opportunity to
receive $1,500 in startup costs for their
