If you are a visitor to the
Village or have lived here
forever, if you are looking for
anything -you will find it at
the WS Tenderspot on Main
Street. 'this business, in vari-
ous forms has been serving
the public since the 1800s,
In the beginning there was
Frank Geomette who was
shunted on the upper end of
Main Street. Early risers were
treated to the smell of the
ciny's bread and pies fresh
from the Targe brick oven.
In a year-round routine,
Geomette set off with a
loaded wagon to make
deliveries and take orders for
the next day, blowing a whis-
tle to announce his arrival.
Resides keeping a fresh
supply of baked goods this
store also had a full line of
confectionary and a lunch-
room where you could get a
tasty lunch at any time. Ile
carried fruits and canned
goods, ice create and soft
drinks.
And then there was Wally
Desjardine
known for many many
years, Desjardine had the
finest pleat market and gen-
eral store, Folks from far and
near travelled to this store
knowing their purchase was
going to be the hest around,
On May 10, 1970 Leo Masse
bought the store and with his
sons Gary, Doug and Dan
and daughter Susan, they
began a career that would
continue us a thriving year
round business more than fur
de'c'ades later. 'I'll!' !meat
department that was popular
for so many years was taken
out after Leo's death eight
years ago.
Len had been a store
manager at Loblaws when he
moved from London. Gary
had also worked for the chain
and followed his dad to the
Bend when they purchased
the store. (They also owned
stores in Zurich and Rayfield.)
They doubled the store in size
and an in-store bakery was
added, 'the baker, Bert
Visscher was always busy -
the greeter when you carne
through the door-aronlonla
you could not resist. They
even sold pizza from the new
bakery. Leo's sons Doug and
Danny were in charge of the
Bayfield store. Susan worked
out of Zurich's store and
helped out in Bayfield on the
weekends and Gary worked
out of the Grand Bend store.
When Leo died in 2003,
Gary took over the shares of
the Grand Bend store and
continued to serve customers
with his own family of four
with wife 1.1i. Richard, Nicole,
Lisa and Michael have all
worked in the store sometime
or another. From top to
bottom -you will what you are
looking for. For the cottager
For the camper you will
find everything you could
possibly need
'!'here are socks and
underwear, sewing supplies,
For anyone who wants
chairs, beach umbrellas, tow-
els and an amazing selection
of floatation devises -the
Tenderspot has every price
range for every pocketbook.
Sandals for men, woman and
children, socks, underwear,
every hoard game you could
possibly want to play and so
much more. If they don't
have it -you don't need it.
Over the years the Masses
have been awarded many
national awards including
National Grocers, the highest
honour for outstanding
achievement in store opera-
tion and community service,
Since the early days with
Frank Geonlettes and then
Wally Desjardine after that -
Gary Masse and his family
have continued to operate
their year round business
with the customer and
community in mind.
