Stephanie Pitsiladis is Tracy or nutyhe
Tracy'htrnblad is Stephanie.
Hairspray, opening this week at
Huron Country Playhouse and sea-
soned actress Pitsiladis is the real thing.
Hairspray is set in 1962 Baltimore,
and tells the story of a young dancer
who wins a spot on a popular TV dance
program. "It's a story about love and
acceptance and a 16 year old who Is
wise beyond her years," says Pitsiladis.
Pitsiladis grew up in Montreal and
like her character has always had the
confidence to stand up for herself and
for others.
. Coming from (reek (mostly) and
British heritage she credits her parents
as her great support. She went to theatre
school under the direction of Geraldine
Doucet, one of Montreal's best known
and loved director/performers. "She
helped me so much," says Pitsiladis. It
was because of Doucet that this actor
took to the Princess of Wales stage play-
ing Tracy'himblad.
Pitsiladis was asked how different she
was to her character.
"Not that different. When you are on
stage you are vulnerable- you have to
make the audience believe your charac-
ter. I atn determined to do that." Pitslla-
das has always stood up for people and
says that is what she is all about. "'That Is
who 1 ata," she says with pride in her
voice, Iler confidence is evident , and
that she says is a great quality whether
you are Tracy 'htrnblad the character or
Stephanie Pitsiladis the actor.
"1 guess the reason that I'm cast to do
this part is that she pretty much defines
who 1 am as a person as well. She's
bubbly and fun and adventurous. She
sticks up for what she believes in," she
says"
()ne thing Pitsiladis was taught in
Montreal by one of her mentors, instruc-
tor/director 'ferry Donald, was the
when you are on stage you are not weal
ing a musk, you are taking one off. "lie
taught me what it meant to tell a story."
Hairspray is Pitsiladis's debut for
Drayton (She is currently finishing up
the same production in St. Jacob) and
she is thrilled to he coming to (rand
Bend. "I can't wait to see your new
beach and downtown and am honoured
to he celebrating this theatre mile-
stone and opening for the i luron Coun-
try Playhouse 4Uth."
Pitsiladis is also known for her stage
parts in Grease and little Miss Muffet as
well as her directing and producing,
which she loves. She also has played
Tracy at Charlottown Festival with actor
Georgi' Wendt and will again play the
part of 'Tracy with hila in Winnipeg
immediatly after llairspray closes July 2.
Other cast members include Ian Deakin,
as 'Tracy's mother Edna 'hlrnblad, and
Larry Mannell, who also had the role in
the Charlottetown production, as Tra-
cy's father. And keep a keen eye out for
Keith Savage.
