What's your `" Embrace the mystery of the black kitchen
backyard style?
During the summer months, your backyard can provide
additional living space - for lounging, eating or
entertaining. And like interior design, the same priorities
make for great rooms outside - think snood, furniture,
colour, lighting and accessories.
Before getting started, determine your personal design
style - urban, cottage or zen? Frank'Iurco,Senior Manager
of Trend and Design, The Home Depot Canada provides
the following tips to create a beautiful room beyond the
back door - whatever your design style:
Urban: To achieve an eclectic, yet homey look, go exotic
with Persian -style rugs, lanterns and cushions or more
classically chic with wrought iron candle lamps, striped
carpets and a black and white theme. Add tailored metal
or light wood furniture with cheery graphics from the
Martha Stewart Living collection, and you have the
makings of a great dinner party.
Cottage: If you favour country flair, think airy wicker
chairs on a wooden deck. For a casual look, consider
Muskoka or butterfly chairs and simple wooden or woven
side tables. Driftwood accents, lanterns and hurricane
lamps add a beachy touch. Add metal cafe tables with
matching chairs or bistro -inspired seats and a trellis to
complete this look, rich in Old World charm,
Zen: The minimalists among us might design their ideal
outdoor lounge with a pergola and dark rattan sectional
or low, modern lounge chairs with cream cushions, Add
Japanese -inspired planters, lush with grasses or sculptural
twigs and discrete deck lights which cast a serene glow. 'lb
create a calm zone In even the smallest space, set up a
sleek metal lounge chair or string a hammock in a
secluded corner.

'Ihe kitchen will always be the centre of the domestic uni-
verse. 'Butt tribal gathering around the fire and the cooking
pot has now morphed into just liking to be close to the
fridge.
As kitchens become more of a social centre and cooking
becomes secondary, even vestigial, it makes sense to think
about ditching the clean, functionalism of white to take the
plunge into darkness. Let go the sunshine brights in favour of
cocktail -lounge darks.
Film writer -director, Nancy Meyers, helped chive the trend
towards dark -kitchens -where -nothing -much -is -cooked. in
her 2(106 movie, The Ilolidtty, Kate Winslet swapped her little
old English cottage for Cameron 1)iaz's mansion in L.A. and
with the deal got an all -black kitchen, minimal and empty.
The fridge held only soya milk and wnter.'ihr cupboards held
only stomach antacids and meals were delivered. Meyers
said later that black was her film's real eye candy.
Interior designers will tell you that black is essential to a
neutral palette, adding drams without colour.
A small space becomes a hold design statement in black,
and is very sexy.
Black adds mystery to size and shape. Like the little black
dress, it hides imperfections and slims down hulk, adding a
seamless elegance.
Add gloss to pure black cabinets, like the eye --catching
lank Magic (518-7) from I'PG Pittsburgh Paints. It makes the
walls dissolve and the kitchen look twice as spacious. Lighting
and accessories become the jewellery. Brighten the feel of
floor -to -ceiling high --gloss black cabinets with a slab of white
marble, or any light counter and backsplash.
Black kitchens are not only big -city chic. Dark country
kitchens are calming and work well with every kind and
colour of wood, When walls and cabinetry are dark, the view
outside will glow like a back -lit projection. If the colour is

uniform, the appliances disappear, it all reads as one. Antique
utensils and colourful pottery - even fruits, vegetables and
flowers -- become bold features.
Try painting over tired and dated wooden cabinets with
dusty black, the colour of cast iron. An elegant choice in a low
sheen is Knight's Armour (PP(: Pittsburgh Paints, 518-6). Add
knobs, hinges and faucets in black for an instant update. If
you're daring, a beautiful engineered stone sink, plus black
laminate countertops and backsplash complete the look.

if the kitchen opens onto the living room, then lighting is
important. Spot --lighting and dimmers let the kitchen
disappear into the background so the colourful objects stand
out like museum or gallery pieces.
Even a white kitchen can use a hit of black. Canadian
homeowner, Elizabeth Frise, had what she considered an
ordinary kitchen with lots of white cabinetry and a dark
granite counter. When brown -black walls were
recommended, she resisted, but took the plunge with Black
Elegance (PPG Pittsburgh Paints, 531-7). "I don't know if It
looks Paris or New York, but I'm thrilled," she says. "The
colour upgrades are everything. It looks classier, dramatic
anci exciting and that's not had, for a gallon of paint."
