8 Lakeshore Advance • Wednesday, April 27, 2011 Business sector wants Grand Bend to move forward Lynda HiNrnan-Rapley Lakeshore Advance It was the business sector's turn to come before council and add their voice to the Mach usage debate. A consultant's report was presented at a public meeting in Grand Bend in late March and the results of those Comments have not coulee back to council. A group of north beach front owners came to council l with a delega- tion in early April to voice their con- cerns with commercialized activity on the beach. With a count of 22 downtown and area businesses in the galtety, Peter Coleman, Larry Mason and Jim McCoy addressed council, first thank- ing them for the beach and downtown enhancement. Coleman thanked the municiplaity for the work they have done but also cautioned, "We urge you not to listen to the negativity." Coleman has been a cottager in Grand Bend for more than 40 years. Ile said the people in the gallery, Ai There are 22 businesses here to show support on a positive responsible way of operating Grand Bend. — Larry Mason the business owners as well as the del- egates are the "doers -they are prop- erty owners, commerical business owners, volunteers etc" Coleman told council this group have been quiet for a year -and he was there to start the conversation. "You have heard from a delegation that says there should lw nothing on the beach. You have spent $6 or 7 million. You need tourists, need responsible use of the beach" Colonial/Gables, a 65 year old family -run business, spokesperson Larry Mason said for a variety of reasons they have been quiet for too long. Mason said they have seen all the changes -in the past and that the new enhancements are wonderful. "We have been involved in Not So Pro for years. it is a great operation and 1 work it from Et till close every day, it is a wonderful event. Some think we reap the benefits and that is not true. It is actually a pain in the ass to make it happen but a wonder- ful opportunity for visitors to come to the Bend and enjoy what we have to offer;" Mason said. Jim McCoy owner of Sea Jeweils saki he is excited about all the changes and has been an owner - operator in (;rand Bend for 20 years. "1 have seen a lot of changes, 20 years ago people stole our hhgs and maybe our patio furniture. "We %vert' considered the wild, wild west but we have moved forward." "We are a tourist industry and sometimes we forget that people take time from their busy lives to visit us. they could go anywhere -but they come here.'Ihe foundation of our liv- lihood is how they get treated. In the past we may not have reached out to you- but in the future we will and you need to reach out to us.
