Making agriculture about farmers key for Bagnato, Liberals
Gerard Creces
QMI Agency
uor Huron -Bruce Liberal
ndidate Charlie Belgium),
t Its election is about
priorities.
"I'm all about the liberal
package - really happy with
what the team is all about,"
he said. "Corporate tax cut
and mega prisons are not the
priorities in t heron Bruce:'
Rather, he said, Liberal
focus on health tend child-
care, doing more for students
and for volunteer firefighters
are more in tune with the
needs of the riding.
Bagnato said he is also
fiercely dedicated to agricul-
ture, and wants to see a Risk
Management Pian that is
built from the farm up, with a
federal government that is
willing to work hand in hand
with the province, So far, he
said, that hasn't happened,
"'she agricultural commu-
nity has had the government
turn their back on us for
years," he said. "'Phis is the
sixth consecutive budget
where the RMP did not
appear."
Bagnato criticized the fed-
eral Agristability plan for its
bureaucratic waste, adding
that by the time farmers were
through with accountants
and lawyers, they were out
money.
"We want to actually snake
it something about farmers,"
he said. "To sustain them
through a bad time."
Ile said a Liberal govern-
ment would also enact a
national food policy that
would put focus on healthy
eating and local food sources.
One such policy would also
force producers in other
countries to follow the sante
standards as Canadian farm-
ers, hampering their ability
to undercut Canadian prod-
ucts in the market place.
"Without successful farm-
ing, we'd be in trouble," he
said. "We've lost most dour
manufacturing. We need
agriculture to he sustained,
healthy and carry on very
strongly."

they want elections,
they want democracy.
It's just a shame if

Charlie ling lato
(:lean, safe water, he said, is not an
Option, and if election will "definitely be
ranting about that.'
"'lite (;teat Lakes are one of the [11051
important components of the province's
and county's future," he said. "We can-
not abuse it. We have to take car' of it:'
'I() that end, he said the role of the
media is crucial In getting the message
out,
"1 can tell you from Walkerton," he
said, "'Che media saved the people of
Walkerton. Without them holding the
Harris government accountable, it
would have been swept under the
carpet."
Bagnato said Stephen Ilarper's
exclusion of the media only denies
Canadians information they have
every right to.
Now on the campaign trail, Megrim()
said traveling the length of a riding this
sire can be pretty grueling day after
day, "but you have to suck it up and
work hard."
"1 canvassed (;rand Bend Sunday
anti Southampton Monday," he said. "I
don't know how many hours I've spent
111 the car in the first 19 days,
"It's just too bad you're not in the
street, knocking on doors."
What he's found in common from
the north to the south, though, is that
in urban areas, people are concerned
about family aid, health care and elder
care. In rural areas, agriculture is the
number one concern in both
counties,
Meanwhile, with the May 2 election
looming closer, Bagnato said the most
important thing to remember is to get
out and vote.
"People all over this world right now
are literally dying because they want
elections, they want democracy," he
said. "It's just a shame if people living
here don't get out and vote,
"All you have to do is give 10-15 min-
utes. 1 beseech people to go out and
vote, no matter which way you vote."
