Lakeshore Advance
For the past 30 years golfers have gathered in Grand Bend in
lune to not only play the sport that is always a challenge but a
two day event to raise money and awareness. Oakwood's Scatch-
erd Classic has never been a small event. Me tournament hegan
in 1981when David Scatcherd wanted to do something impor-
tant for his friend Dave Blair whose daughter was mentally
challenged. Actors, sports celebrities, politicians and, newscast-
ers have graced the well kept links, some as amataurs some as
pros --everyone there to help Scatcherd raise money for Com-
munity living and local needs to the tune of $1.2 million to date.
'Ihis year's will mark Scatcheri's 75th birthday and the event's
30th and many golfers will he back to celebrate both. Organizers
hope to raise $105,000.00 this year- the 75 and 30 added together.
For the next few weeks the Lakeshore Advance will focus on
some of the highlights from the past three decades.
In 1984 James MacAuthur (Book em' Danno) came to Grand
Bend to play the tournament. During the two days his mother,
actress I lelen flays showed up to visit with the Scathcert's and to
cheer on her son.
MacAuthur Ix)m in December 1937 passed away last October
in Florida. I le came to the tournament by request of his good
friend David Scatcherd and since he was doing a theatre cruise
that would end up in Vancouver, MacAuthur and 1 layes travelimi
across Canada by train arriving in Toronto the day before the
tournarnent. "I've led a very interesting life," MacAuthur told
reporters that beautiful June day 27 years ago. 1 le began on the
theatre stage when he just ten years old and was a 1 larvard stu-
dent majoring in history. He left school after two years when he
realized the paycheque for acting was larger than those of a grad-
uate. From theatre to movies to the small screen joining 1 lawaii
50 series as Danny Williams.
The beautiful day was relaxing and leisurely for hundreds of
