Bluewater eyes
Hensall water hike,
Vanessa Brown
OMI Agency
Bluewater's water supplier has narrowed
the reason for Hensall's exorbitant rise in
water use down to four possibilities.
Andrew Henry, the administrator for the
Lake Huron Primary Water Supply System,
presented his findings at Bluewater coun-
cil's April 4 session.
The first possibility, he said, is that Hen-
sall's meter is giving faulty readings. When
the Lake Huron system began supplying
water to Hensall in 2009, the pipeline was
designed to handle flows to the village as
well as to the proposed ethanol plant.
"That since has yet to come to fruition, so
the volumes that were originally designed
for this pipe to handle aren't there yet,"
Henry said.
Hensall's meter has since been repro-
grammed twice, causing "significant
improvement," Henry said.
As previously reported, Ilensall's water
usage almost doubled since last summer,
from an average of 18,000 cubic metres up
to 29,000 cubic metres per month. At their
Feb. 7 council meeting, Bluewater council-
lors decided to determine the cause of such
a high rise in usage before raising the
municipality's water rates.
At that meeting, deputy mayor Paul
Klopp said, "it's almost like having a popu-
lation not paying for water."
Henry spent most of his April 4 presenta-
tion outlining potential metering solutions,
but his three other possibilities included a
leak; the water supply system overfilling
I Iensall's resevoir; and stolen or unmetered
water.
"At this point, we're fairly confident that
nobody's capable of stealing something in
the order of 12 million litres per month.
You'd notice that," he said.
The Lake Huron Primary Water Supply
System is currently working with Bluewater
staff to determine the potential of a leak. He
said the two parties have yet to verify
whether Hensall's reservoir is being over-
filled. The reservoir is currently being filled
constantly with low flows of water. Henry
and Brent Kittmer, Bluewater's utilities
superintendent, both said filling the reser-
voir intermittently with higher flows would
produce more accurate readings.
"It could be any one of those options or a
combination thereof, and we're confident
that within the month, we can have at least
most of those narrowed down and final
implementation," Henry said.
Digital Mammography Fundraiser
Ray Letheren, a resident of Bayfield,
requested $2,500 from the municipality for
the Festival of Fitness and Art that will be
held in Bayfield on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.
The festival is a fundraiser that will bene-
fit the Alexandra Marine and General Hos-
pital Foundation's Digital Mammography
campaign.
"I'tn one of many citizens in the village
that are anxious to assist in the funding of
this mammography equipment that is so
critical to women of this county," Letheren
said.

"Breast cancer is a horrible disease, We
know that we can reduce the pain and suf-
fering of this disease with early detection.
With the purchase of a $550,000 full -field
digital mammography unit and the recent
addition of a $5.5 million CT scanner,
Huron County will have one of the best
equipped radiology departments in any
rural hospital in Canada."
The festival is comprised of both art and
fitness components. An art show, called
Breastworks, will feature local artists' work
that represents the breast to raise aware-
ness for the county's need for a digital
mammography unit.
The two-day event will also include a
40 -kin cycling event around the municipal-
ity and an 8 km run/walk, which will begin
in Clan Gregor Square in Hayfield and travel
along the village's trails. Letheren said a
fourth component will be a food festival.
In addition to the $2,500, Letheren
requested that Bluewater donate the use of
Hayfield's community centre and arena, as
well as emergency services such as the fire
department and St. John's ambulance in
the event of an emergency.
Councillors expressed their supptK ° the event and will vote on the donation dur-
ing budget meetings.
