Daycares OK with JK, reports official
Cheryl Heath
OMI Agency
What the end result of a provincewide full-day Junior
Kindergarten program will have on daycare centres has
yet to be seen.
Upon questioning from Coun. Bernie MacLellan
(Huron East) at Huron County's March 23 committee -of -
the -whole session, Children's Services Manager Ivy
McDonagh says it is still too early to gauge what kind of
impact full-day 1K will have on the county's daycare pro-
grams since all schools have yet to offer it.
So far, she says, the Clinton Cooperative Childcare
Centre has been the one hardest hit since full-day 1K is
available at both the public and separate schools In
Clinton.
"'They (the CCC) really haven't shown any great loss at
this time," says McDonagh, noting part of the rationale
for that may be the popularity of infant and toddler pro -
grains, which are more costly to run but also in demand.
McDonagh says it appears parents would rather place
infants and toddlers in licensed daycare facilities than
private homes.
Another Look
Ashfield Colborne Wawanosh would like to take a sec-
ond look at a proposed countywide mandatory septic
system maintenance program but, as Coun. Ben Van
Diepenbeek (ACW) learned last week, doing so will
require a scheduled appearance by program lead Bob
Worsen at an upcoming committee -of -the -whole session.

It will also require an agreement by councillors to raise
the issue from the table.
Coun. Bernie MacLellan (Huron East) is still open to
hearing more about the program, but says receiving a
written report would also he welcome.
Ready to Hire
The committee is armed and ready to hire.
Thanks to (notions approved by the Huron County
Library Board at its March meeting, the library board has
both approved a committee entrusted in taking care of
the hiring process for the county's new cultural services
director in the wake of Beth Ross's decision to retire corse
lune, as well as a comprehensive Job description crafted
by Human Resources director Darcy Michaud.
"Beth has been incredibly helpful," notes Michaud in
reference to the new job description required given that
Ross took on a number of extra duties after starting with
the county as its chief librarian in the 1980s.
Though the hiring committee was originally slated to
include two public members of the library board, three
public representatives were eventually agreed upon after
four trustees were nominated and only one, County
Coun. Dave Riach (North Huron), turned down the
opportunity.
As it stands, the candidates for cultural services direc-
tor are slated to meet with a hiring committee that will
consist of County Warden Neil Vincent (North Huron),
library board chairman Brian Barnim (Central Huron),
library board vice-chairman Bill Siemon (Huron Bust),
along with board trustees County Coun. 'Tyler Ilessel
(Bluewater), Peggy Menzies and Phil Gandon.
Let's Hear It
County Warden Neil Vincent is urging fellow council-
lors to decry any changes to a provincewide coyote pre-
dation program that could result in fewer animals being
caught.
Vincent note the deadline to submit letters of concern
is fast approaching and should he forwarded to him by
the first week of April.
