The klncardlne fish derby has been revived from.obllvlon

The 26th Fish Kincardine Derby has been
revived from cancellation for 2011.
In Just eight days the Kincardine and
District Chamber of Commerce successfully
recuittated the event, which two weeks ago
was said to be dead in the water.
"We are moving forward to rescue this
event with community and participant sup-
port; said Chamber President Bob Sitnpson.
During a council meeting on Wednesday,
March 16 Simpson addressed Municipality of
Kincardine councillors to gather support for
the derby.
Simpson listed the three requests the
Chamber had of council, without which they
would not be able to run the derby. First, the
Chamber needed the bylaw prohibiting over-
night camping in reunion park to be waived
during the event (May 20-29), they need the
use of municipal weigh stations, ad they need
the municipal garbage pickup for the event.
Council was impressed with the Chamber's
presentation and were supportive of the
revival of the derby.
"It was disheartening for me when we saw
that there was no interest in the derby. I'm
hooked," said Councillor Randy Roppel.
"1 am amazed by the volunteers in this
community, if you can do all this in just eight
days then go for it," said Deputy Mayor Anne
Eadie.
Council approved all of the Chamber's
requests and will grant the camping
exemption at Reunion Park during the next
council meeting, said Mayor Larry Kraemer.
Simpson said the Chamber was interested
in protecting local merchants from possible
losses due to the cancellation of the event.
However, he warned council and the
community that the derby will not look like it
has in the past.
"We don't have the time to raise enough
funds to support the large events at the
beach," said Simpson. The Chamber plans to
move derby events, like the fish fry, into local
business establishments.
"By eliminating the events at the harbour
we are on track with our sponsorship," said
Simpson. He added the Chamber has already
received nearly $7,000 in funding from local
businesses. Council also pledged to donate
whatever exists in their Fishing Derby Reserve
Fund, despite the fact the Chamber did not
request any financial assistance from
council.
Simpson said the Chamber has made an
early estimate of $8,000 for their total
expenses, although he admitted the number
may need some refining.
"This will be a break-even event. We don't
expect to make any money this year," said
Simpson.
"We will look forward to managing the
event this year and into the future, continuing
to improve it to help the community," he
said.
The Chamber's three main goals to make
the derby a success are: making use of local
establishments, increasing volunteers and
working with the municipality, said
Simpson.
Simpson also took strides to dispel myths
circulating about the derby. He assured coun-
cil there is support from businesses, as every
business the Chamber has contacted has
been supportive of running the derby this
year. There are fish in the lake, he said, and
the derby does not cost $50,000. The fishers
are interested in coming and most don't care
about the traditionally large prizes.
"We are moving forward, everything wl?•'
very positive from council," said Situps() Q'
Anyone interested in volunteering should'
contact the Chamber office at 396-9333. The
Chamber is looking for donations for prizes
for the derby.
Simpson added communicating to
communities that the derby will happen this
year is very important.
