March is Nutrition month
Lynda Hillman-Rapley
Lakeshore Advance
For 30 years Canadian dieti-
tians have been celebrating
national Nutrition Month in
March. Huron County's Public
Health Dietitian says it's a great
time to remind Huron County
residents about the importance of
healthy eating at home, school
and work. Amy MacDonald gets
excited when talking about the
wealth of healthy eating programs
and activities happening in I luron
County.
MacDonald says this year's
theme of "Celebrating Food from
Field to 'Table" is a perfect fit for
Huron County. "We have strong
agricultural roots and we have
year-round access to great locally
grown, raised and produced
foods"
An important group
MacDonald works with is the
Huron -Perth Farm to Table Net-
work (www.huronperthfarmtota-
ble.ca). The group produces the
Buy local Buy Fresh Map and
supports the Huron Good Food
Box. The network members work
together to make it easier for
Iluron County residents to access
locally grown food and learn
more about how it is grown,
MacDonald feels one program
that has a great impact in Iluron
County is the 1 iuron Community
Food Advisors, They are trained
volunteers who offer presenta-
tions on healthy eating and cook-
ing. 'they have several workshops
planned during March. A food
advisor can be hooked for any
community group or event free of
charge through the health unit.
One of the ways MacDonald
will be celebrating Nutrition
Month is on her food blog, www.
HereOnFood.ca. MacDonald
shares nutrition information and
recipes with Huron County resi-
dents on the blog. A recent story
contest brought in dozens of
memories from Iluron County
residents. The stories will be fea-
tured during March on the bldg.
"The importance of health and
nutrition are becoming more rec-
ognized. One thing I'm so excited
about is the new School Food and
Beverage Policy which collies into
effect in September of this year. 1t
means students will have more
access to healthy food and bever-
ages at school. Ultimately this will
improve the health of our young
people in iluron County."
MacDonald is encouraged by
the activity in the community
around healthy eating. In particu-
lar she says people can get relia-
ble information easier than in the
past. The health unit website has
a whole section on Nutri-
tion which MacDon-
ald developed: www.

health.
MacDonald
will be one of a
dozen Huron
County regis-
tered dietitians
who are cele -
h r a t e d on
notional Dieti-
tians Day on
March 16. The
group will be get-
ting together at the
I luron County health
Unit to celebrate local
programs and share a
healthy meal.
Nutrition Month is an
initiative of Dietitians of
Canada. For more informa-
