Ciufo brings history to life in St. Joseph
The play - Narcisse - tells
the story of arguably one of
Huron County's most
colourful residents - Narcisse
Cantin - best known for his
audacious plan to create a
mammoth canal cutting
across Southwestern Ontario,
connecting Lake Huron to
Lake Erie from St. Joseph to
Port Stanley. Cantin turned
St. Joseph into an early 20th
Century boomtown on
speculation of the canal's
construction. This
charismatic promoter forged
leople including prominents with
'tAmerican
steel magnate Charles
Schwab and recently
canonized Brother Andres,
founding cleric of St. Joseph's
Oratory in Montreal.
Area actors will give
dramatic readings of several
of the play's scenes as part of
Doors ()pen I luron County.
St. Joseph's history will be
brought to life with
traditional French-Canadian
fiddle playing and visual
displays from the St. Joseph
Museum & Archives.
"We're going to give people
a sneak peek ata play that
brings the fascinating,
compelling history of St.
Joseph to life, said
playwright Pahl Chafo.
The premiere of this
family-oriented, outdoor
play takes place on the
grounds of St. Peter's
Catholic Church, St. Joseph,
July 2011.
Ciufo was commissioned
to write Narcisse by The St.
Joseph Historical Society.

production is made possible
