Zurich midgets up 2-1
in OMHA semi's finais
Another Sunday (Feb. 20) afternoon travelling North for
the Zurich Midgets with only one thing on their mind win-
' ning Game 3 and coming Home for Wed. night with a 2 game
advantage and winning this Semi final on Home ICE!! Game
1 ended in a disappointing loss for the Thunder letting go of a
3 -1 lead in the third period and losing 5 to 3. However they
rebounded well to win Game 2 on Home Ice last Wed, night
with a 4 -3 victory. Which sent them into Game 3 with the
series split one game a piece. The first period was interesting
and both teams scored one goal a piece, Zurich's Brett
LaPorte making the most of his spot in front of the net off
some great passing by Drew Wood and Greg Cooper. Due to
some lack of disapline on the part of the Normanby team
they gave Zurich a couple of 5 on 3 power play opportunities
at the start of the second and Kurtis Denomme tipped in goal
number 2 for Zurich from a nice point shot by defenceman
Kris Ducharme. Although it was a rather rough game the
Thunder managed to keep their cool and play a good game.
At 3:38 in the second from a long Bearing attempt by Cooper,
Captain Nick LaPorte picked up the puck at the offensive
blueline and put one in the net while sliding across the ice,
giving Zurich a 3 -1 lead going into the 2nd intermission. The
Thunder played a good defensive third period and with the
awsome goaltending by Josh Groot they managed to hang
onto the lead up to the final buzzer.
Zurich Peewee rep
headed to OMHA finals
The Zurich Peewee Rep team is headed to the OMIIA
Championship Finals after defeating a strong Port Carling
team 4-3 in front of their home fans at the Bluewater Com-
munity Centre. It capped off two straight one goal victories
after being hammered 7-0 in game two, A very determined
home team battled hard for the entire game. With several
players on the ice with the flu and colds, others out with inju-
ries and sickness, the boys really had to dig deep to pull this
one off. Port Carling jumped out to an early lead scoring 3
minutes into the game, Mitch Finlay scored on a breakaway
at the 7 minute mark to tie it, Port Carling quickly took the
lead back scoring 40 seconds later, before Finlay responded
with another unassisted marker 25 seconds later to knot the
score at two. The tides turned in the second period as Finlay
completed his hat trick on a pass from Joey Mathonia, then
Tyler Merner scored the eventual game winner on a nice
head man pass from Connor Brand. In the third the opposi-
tion battled back to close the gap to 4-3 at the 5 minute shark.
Zurich was handed a 5 minute major, charging penalty with 3
minutes remaining in regulation, The upcoming penalty kill
would make for an intense finish to the game. The hard work
and pressure from the shorthanded Zurich team prevailed,
they allowed only 1 shot on goal and by the time Port Carling
was able to pull their goaltender for an extra attacker it was
too late. The horse team then celebrated their first ever berth
in the OMHA finals. An under the weather Will Overholt
showed alot of heart making some great saves to preserve the
huge win. Hats off to goaltender Wade Coombs for corning
out to back him up. Jake Earle, Devon Steckler, Jacob Laporte,
Travis Cressman, Nathan King and Jaren Oke all played great
games for the locals, ZMAA mascot 'Thunder Man' was out In
full force pumping up fans and players throughout the game.
.'.urich now faces off against the Manvers Mustangs in the
'Tina's. Game times will be available at www.zurichminor-
hockey.ca when they are decided. I lead coach Pete Overholt
commented that every player should be very proud of their
accornplishment so far, it was no easy task knocking off the
reigning OMHA Champions, only time will tell if one more
page can be written in their storybook season.
