Ontario considers loosening liquor laws
Beer tents could be
a thing of the past
in proposed
provincial rules.
Antonella Artuso, Queen's Park
Bureau Chief
OMI Agency
Beer tents could he u thing of
the past in proposed provincial
rules.
Ontarians may soon he freed
from the beer tent.
Attorney General Chris Bentley
is considering changes to the prov-
ince's booze rules that would per-
mit adults to wander
around festivals and events with
an alcoholic drink in hand instead
of confining them to shall desig-
nated areas.
"Imagine a hot summer's day,
maybe at the (Toronto)'ftste of the
Danforth, maybe at a festival in
some other part of the province ...
would you like to he able to enjoy
the festival while walking around
with a glass of beer or a glass of
wile;' Bentley asked Wednesday.
"Or do you think the only place
you should be able to enjoy alco-
hol is in a beer tent or behind a
fence? We think Ontarians are
ready for a little bit more,"
The minister will engage Ontar-
ians in a month-long discussion
before acting, possibly as early as
this summer.
Last call al special events such
as weddings could be moved to 2
a.nn. from the current 1 a.m.
deadline.
Other changes brewing include
allowing Ontario tourism opera-
tors to offer all-inclusive packages
with accommodation, food and
drinks.
Tourism and Culture Minister
Michael Chan said the current
rules that stop Ontario operators
from offering drinks as part of an
all-inclusive package put them at a
competitive disadvantage with
many other regions when it comes
to attracting the lucrative interna-
tional tourism market.
There are other outdated alco-
hol regulations that should go
down the drain, Bentley said.
1f a restaurant server has to cross
a sidewalk to get to 41 patio, the
owner has to set up a separate
remote bar, he said.
"Why not eliminate that type of
rule. It gets in the way of business.
1t gets in the way of tourism. It gets
in the way of people enjoying
themselves," Bentley said.
Premier Dalton McGuinty said
he'll be interested in the results of
the public consultations but sees
no problem with permitting peo-
ple to walk around with a drink at
a street festival.
"We're just kind of growing up a
little bit as Ontarians," McGuinty
said,
"We bring a more progressive
and enlightened approach with
respect to use of alcohol.„
