Rotary continue to educate
Lynda Hillman-Rapley
Lakeshore Advance
Some children have never owned their
own book. And now they do, thanks to
the continued efforts of the Grand Bend
Rotary Club.
This Rotary Club was chartered on
May 3rd 1991, As of July, 2010 they have
contributed $822,970 to community and
international services since its charter.
One special project they have been
working on for the past few years is mak-
ing sure the children of South Africa
have the essentials for education.
As new schools are being built in I laid,
Rotary Club international has sent our
local clubs a list of immediate needs to
furnish the buildings.
With a surplus of desks and books
from schools that have closed, the furni-
ture and supplies have not gone to
waste.
The children of Middelburg have
received a box filled with school sup-
plies; books, pencils, glue etc.
New morns in the hospitals received a
box of baby necessities and a knitted rug
from squares that came from this com-
munity, crocheted together by unem-
ployed ladies from that community,' A
challenge in itself" says Charles Deaner,
president of the Rotary Club of Middle-
burg.South Africa.
mThanks to the Grand Bend Rotary
ub, nine schools have received library
books. Many of the schools have never
had a library and had no building, shelv-
ing or trained librarian/teachers. That is
all changing.
The desks have found homes within
the school system and office equipment
has been %veil received lvith teachers and
staff now being able to file and store
safely.
Denner says computers are a major
challenge as computer literacy is "appall-
ing." i le says they are currently trying to
set up a centre for teacher training on
the donated computers which will then
be placed at the schools. "The other
problem is getting security in place with
limited funds," he says.
the
Grand Bend Rotary Club are again
in the process of filling another con-
tainer on route to South Africa.
