Kincardine derby needs volunteers

With not a single volunteer stepping
forward, this year's Fish Kincardine
Derby may never get a chance to get off
the ground.
lhis could spell the end of an 25 -year
era in the Municipality of Kincardine,
said Economic Development and'Ibur-
isnm's Steve Murray, who said five peo-
ple are needed for the committee, along
with another 10-15 to operate the mid-
May event.
"We haven't heard a thing from any
volunteers and it's certainly an event we
can't run without volunteers," Murray
said.
The derby has had some tough last
few years, putting a strain on the munic-
ipal budget that provides $50,000
towards the event. Murray said It's typi-
cally a "break even" event that brings
people into the municipality as a finan-

I benefit, but any losses smust be cut
ut of the tourism budget the following
year.
Murray said it's a shame as it's been a
major shoulder season event in the area
for a quarter-century. Ile said notice of
the event's peril may spur interest to
keep it going, but he fears a decline in
fish stocks and the sport's popularity
could be a culprit, as derbies are on the
decline across the province.
"It would be unfortunate because it's
one of the longest running events in the
municipality," he said.
Aside from volunteers, council will
also decide the fate of the event's
budget during a tough financial year in
the municipality.
