Stay tuned—another
weekend of carnival fun
the first weekend of Grand Bend's
winter carnival was a blast with kids
events and many Benguin, the
carnival's mascot sightings. In the mid
1980s a group of people realized locals
and visitors wanted sontething to do in
the winter, and that premise
continued. This year 18 boxes were
carved with a reminder of the late
1980s or the beginnings of carnival. As
in so many other carnivals the kids
who have a chance to check out the
entertainment at the school were
excited and had a lot of fun with their
peers. Baseball, Olympic, shuffleboard
and golf participants braved the cold
and the snow - the real testament of
this two -weekend event. Unlike many
of the past 25 carnivals -this year there
is no shortage of snow.
Next weekend there is more
activities that include the parade and
the fireworks. 'There is a craft show,
3 on 3 hockey, firemen's breakfast, the
infamous waiter's race and lots more.
'Bike a tour downtown- many of the
business sector stays open all year and
would love to have you stop by. There
is lots of entertainment and many
places to dine. For the event schedule

Operation Leave the Streets Behind
Dear Editor,
" We believe that we are the bridge
between the streets and the lifestyle they
deserve after having served their county hon-
ourably" said Ed Pigeau, Ontario Command
President of the Royal Canadian legion.
Our service men and women have always
stood up for Canada's values. It is our
responsibility to be them for them when
they need us most.
The latest project of the Royal Canadian
Legion is to help get homeless veterans oft
the streets. There have been over 100
veterans found living on the streets in the city
of Toronto. 1 homeless veterans have also
been found living in London, Ottawa,
Kitchener, Ilamiltan and Timmins. 'Ihe age of
these homeless veteran is from 22 to 87 years.
The average time these veternns have spent
homeless is 6 years.
'Ihe Royal Canadian legion in Grund Bend
held a spaghetti dinner, during Winter
Carnival, on Saturday, February 5. 'the dinner
was by donation only. All the proceeds from
the dinner will go to directly to Operation
Leave the Streets Behind.

Family Day-

February 21-
Let's
Celebrate J

Family Day is observed in the Canadian
provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan and
Ontario on the third Monday of February.
This holiday celebrates the importance of
families and family life to individuals and
their communities. According to various
government documents, Family Day was
first held in Canada in the province of
Alberta in 1990 It was, at that time supposed
to reflect the values of family and home that
were importnt to the pioneers who founded
Alberta and give the workers the opportunity
to spend more time with their families.
Family Day was introduced to Saskatchewan
in 2007 and in our home province of Ontario
in 2008. This holiday also provides a "little`
break in the lowtretch between New Year's
Day and Good Friday.
So, we have a wonderful opportunity to
celebrate our family, our values and our time
well spent together. What do people do on
this given holiday? Many families and
friends of families, plan to take part in
activities that reflect a time of fun, with both
outdoor activities and in home events. In
Grand Bend the 25th Winter Carnival begins
February 4th and runs through to the 13th of
February giving families a head start on
Family Day celebrations. Close by, numerous
community groups in South Huron are
planning Family Day events on Monday
February 21st, beginning with the Exeter
Lions Club hosting a breakfast at the
recreation centre followed by free skating
from 9:00a.m.-3:00p.nn. Check your local
listings for all events.
At home, you and your family members
might consider engaging in several of the
following exciting activities:
• A picnic in your backyard -who says
picnics are only a summer event!
• A treasure hunt and a mystery meal -let
your imagination go wild!
• Gaines, games, games -whether the Wii,
Scrabble, Clue, or a 1000 piece puzzle have
fun!
• Be creative -take winter photos, make a
collage of your pictures, draw or paint!
• Be active -hike on many of our local
trails, go tobogganing or tubing, make snow
sculptures!
Family Day is simply meant to be that -a
Day for Your Family. Capture the excitement
that you and your family can create on this
special day. Enjoy each other and take time
to be with each other. Remember that FAM-
ILY DAY can be at time of:
• Fun • Activities • Make a Meal • Initiate
something new • Love each other • Yes
enjoy your FAMILY
