"Our focus is to promote exercise in a
way that assists people achieve their indi-
vidual health potential and fitness goals."
Along with the 1 lot Yoga, Pilates, Boot
Camp and Bunning classes offered at the
studio, Tully felt that lumba" would Ix' an
upbeat addition to offer the residents of
(rand Bend and surrounding areas.
Participants appear to he feeling the
positive effects. The instructors all agree
the focus on having fun is what keeps
bringing people hack. Music ranges from
current hill hoard hits to red-hot interna-
tional calypso, and each routine is derived
from four basic steps: salsa, meringue,
cambia and reggaeton, with a variety of
variations as long tinw resident 1.iz Leath-
erlanel has a beaming smile throughout
her one hour classes. The novelty hasn't
worn off yet, as after six months, she's still
learning the moves. it also gives her an
avenue for socialising.
"I'm 00 my own, so this is a positive
outlet for ane," said Leatherlan(i, who
considers herself a !mature participant.
"1 love this class." One participant
marked her individual achievements
with a photo of her and her Zomba -
instructor for her life diary.
Rally, Olson and Eisler, have undergone
extensive training and are all currently cer-
tified Zunlba" instructors. 'hilly and Olson
obtained their instructor certifications two
years ago and have been teaching for the
past eighteen months. Eisler began partic-
ipating in classes a year ago, atter receiving
a gift certificate from her daughter for
Christmas. She was "hooked" immedi-
ately. With the encouragement of Tully
and Olson, she recently achieved her
instructor's certification, something, she
would 1 1
to accomplish at the age of 54. "'1 he class
participation inspires each individual to
move their body in ways that they proba-
bly thought they couldn't do and have so
much fun at the sanne tittle," says Eisler.
'Tully indicated that previous dance'
experience isn't necessary. Participants
can modify each move to their own indi-
vidual pace.
Although they are seasoned fitness
instructors, 'fully and Olson weren't
trained to shake their hips and shoul-
ders during workout sessions. Initially it
was a challenge, but fe'e'ling the music's
energy was inspiring. "The hest part
about teaching lunlba" is showing peo-
ple how to move, have fun and senile, all
important things to do on a daily basis.
