January
- South Huron
Mayor Ken Oke was
• chosen as county
warden for 2009,
following a secret
ballot held before a
packed chamber of
supporters for both
Oke and outgoing
warden John
Bezaire (Central
Huron) who was
seeking a second
consecutive term in
office. Cour. Bernie
MacLennan (Huron
East) put forth by
Bezaire's nomina-
tion.
The 23 -year-old
former Lucknow
Fall Fair ambassa-
dor, now nurse and
Kinloss native,
Ashley Husk is
heading off to
Uganda, Africa to
volunteer her time
and expertise to help
the less fortunate.
She hopes it will be
a life changing expe-
rience and give her a
broader perspective
on the world.
- Wescast Industries
Inc., a manufacturer
of exhaust systems,
announced that it
would be restructur-
ing its North
American opera-
tions significantly,
which would see the
loss of about 140
jobs. They would
close the Wingham
North Huron
foundry and transfer
the plant's produc
tions to its second
Wingham foundry,
which is located on
Water St.
- Samantha Mayer
of Lucknow was set
to compete in the
2009 Special
Olympics world
Winter Games, from
Feb. 6 to 13 in
Boise, Idaho, USA.
It was bean opportu-
nityofalifetimefor
Mayer, who is excit-
ed about the event.
Mayer will be com-
peting in Alpine ski-
ing, while represent-
ing Canada.
February
- The Kingsbridge
Youth Group from
St. Joseph's
Kingsbridge Church
went on a special
trip to Costa Rica in
early January. They
had the privilege of
helping orphaned
children and gave
the orphanage a
makeover.. • . The
youth group did
things like paint
rooms, fix plumb-
ing, so there would
be runningwater in
all ofthe sinks. The
youth group's goal
was to give some
hope to the less for-
tunate.
- The deadline for all
users, including all
Lucknow residents,
of the Mid -Huron
Landfill to start
using clear garbage
bags was March ` 1.
The Mid -Huron
Landfill Site Board
made the decision to
switch to clear bags
to decrease the
amount of recy-,
clables and. .haz-
ardous waste that
ends up in the land-
fill.
- - The Lucknow
Strawberry
Summerfest com-
mittee ' was looking
for people to get
involved to help out
with the work . load.
Chair of the
Summerfest com-
mittee, Betty
Stanley, was dis-
couraged over the
number of people
attending the recent
meeting, but was
optimistic that there
would be a myriad
ofevents for
Summerfest.
- Joan and Steve
Chamney were
named recipients of
the Lucknow and
District Chamber of
Commerce's com-
munity service
award. The
Chamneys were co-
chairs of the 2008
Lucknow Reunion.
March
- People came out in
droves to show how
proud they were of
Samantha Mayer's
athletic accomplish-
ment. The celebra-
tion night for the
local athlete showed
Lucknow's
acknowledgement
for all of the hard
work Mayer put into
the 2009 Special
Olympics World
Winter Games.
Mayer came away
with a gold , in the
slalom, fourth m the
giant slalom and
fifth in the super g.
- Lucknow residents
had their first day of
clear garbage bag
pick up and to the
dismay of a lot of
people, more bags
were being left then
being picked up. The
Bruce Area Solid
Waste Recycling
who is responsible
for garbage pick up
in Lucknow is under
strict regulations not
to pick up any bag
that has any recy-..
clables in it, from
fine paper to card-
board to plastics.
- On the weekend of
March 7 Bobby
Raymond and the
RIT Tigers captured
their first . ever
Division 1 NCAA
"Atlantic_
Conference" men's
hockey champi-
onship. Raymond
was recruited and
joined the team in
their fiist season. in
division 1 hockey.
- The Silver Lake
WI, started on Aug.
30, 1957, disbanded
due to lack of mem-
bership. Silver Lake
was a big part of the
community in and
around the Kinloss
area. They helped
put together a lot of
community event
and gave their sup-
porttoalotofthe
clubs in the area.
April
The Lucknow
Atom LL team fin-
ished the 2008/09
season with a record
of 32 wins zero loss-
es and one overtime
tie. These kids
showed great skill
and determination
all year long. They
fought back several
times when trailing
by a goal or two and
they never gave up.
With hard work and
smart , hockey they
were rewarded by
winning the WOAA
championship. •
- Murray Gaunt,
who has worked in
poultry farming,
provincial politics
and farmbroadcast-
ing in, the Wmgharo,
area for 40 years,
passed away on
March 31, at the age
of 73. Gaunt had a
great career and it all
stemmed from his
rural upbringing on
the family's Hi -Hill
Farm near Lucknow,
through to his first
broadcasting job at
CKNX in Wmghan,
to his political career
as MPP for Huron -
Bruce, from 1962 to
1981.
- There was a lot of
discussion at the
uron-Kinloss Twp.
council meeting on
April 6, about how
the implementation
of clear bags has
been going. It had
been a trial and eiror
period for many of
the residents of
Lucknow, but the
major concern was
the removal of the
recycling bins
behind the Bank of
Montreal.
The inaugural Music
in the Fields, being
presented by the
Lucknow Kinsmen,
would see a strong
lineup of Canadian
country music stars
on Aug. 22. The one
day event will run
from around 12 p.m.
until 1 a.m. on the
Lucknow soccer
fields
Kloe Livingston
donated 15 inches of
her hair, to the Angel
Hair fund (a charity
which helps young
children battling
with cancer). She
was also be raising
money for Prader -
Willi Syndrome,
which Kloe has had
since birth.

began the next leg of
his hockey career as
the Ontario Hockey
League's Plymouth
Whalers selected
him in the: fust round
and 13th overall in
this year's priority
selection draft on
May 2.
,Bruce Power hired
Murray Elston, a
well-known politi-
cian and experi-
enced professional,
to fill its new posi-
tion as vice president
of corporate affairs.
- Bruce County
council endorsed an
effort aimed at keep-
ing network televi-
sion in rural markets.
The corporate serv-
ices committee gave
a vote of support to a
resolution from
North Huron asking
the CRTC to make
changes that will
provide new rev-
enue and keep local
television viable.

• The Lucknow and
District .Recreation
Board applied to the
Re'creationai
Infrastructure
Canada (RInC) pro-
gram
for $740,000
for money to go
towards an arena
addition and the
paving of .the park-
ing lot for the
Lucknow and
District • Sports
Complex.

Huron -Kinloss

from the federal and

- The 10hh annual
Dungannon Super
Pull was in fulithmt-
fle at the Dungannon
Fair Grounds with a
number of trucks
pulling through the
mind. People from all
over the area came
to see the exciting
annual event.
