Council not pleased with highway changes
BY DENNY SCOTT

Highway 21 is getting a
makeover north of Goderich, but
it isn't exactly what councillors
from Ashfield-Colbome-
Wawanosh were looking for.
The council discussed. pro-
posed changes to the provincial-
ly-mantained road that were
upcoming, and were dissapoint-
ed to say that it looked like the
road would recieve only minor
touch-ups.
Council decided to suggest as
many different changes as possi-
ble to the provincial government
in hopes that the work could be
done while the minor repair
work is being done.
Suggestions surrounding the
intersection of Airport Line,
MTO Road, and Highway .21
included expansion at the inter-
section, and sign reloaction to.
increase visibility. Several coun-
cillors also expressed a desire to
see the right-hand turn lane that
begins before the • Canadian
National Rail Bridge Crossing
expanded to prior to the tum to
Safford, to stop .traffic conges-
tion.
Several councillors also sug-
gested that a walking path be
created along -side the road to
allow bikers and hikers access
from the CNR Bridge to trails
and paths North of Goderich.
As per request of the Ministry
of Transportation, , council
approved the usage of
Sheppardton Line and Nile
Road to create a detour for work
done between where the two
roads intersect the highway.

Bedbugs are on
the radar for Bruce
County social hous-
ing department.
So far they are
not 'a big issue, but
manager Susan
Earle wants to keep
it that. way.
" We've had just
a couple cases, so
we're trying to do
some tenant educa-
tion and staff edu-
cation, and stop it
before it gets start-
ed," Earle said.
Both cases were
in Kincardine,
Earle said.
She emphasized
that bedbugs are not
a sign of bad house-
keeping, and are not
exclusive to low
income housing%

Treatment
involves an exhaus-
tive spray program
that means work
and expense for the
tenant and housing
authority.
"To make sure
it's not spreading to
other units we have
to do the unit
involved plus usu-
ally the unit on
either side to make
sure we stop (the
bugs migrating),"
Earle said.

to preside over weddings.
Becker, who can delegate the
right to perform nuptials to any-
one who has been certified, and
McGregor, who Becker has
already 'deputized,' were trained
in performing civil marriage cer-
emonies recently, which are a bit
different from typical county
weddings, he said.
"Well, around here, most peo-
ple plan for a long time before
their weddings," Becker ..said.
"But the same kind of planning
isn't really necessary here; it can
be, but it's not needed."
Couples see king matrimonial
ceremonies need to have a mar-
riage lisence prior to scheduling
a time with ACW, and the cost to
have either Becker or McGregor
preside is $350.
"We'll be offering the service
very soon," Becker said. "As
soon ' as we receive an official
registry."
There are things to remember
with civil ceremonies, according
to Becker.
"One of the big things is that
the ceremony really only legally
requires three different things to
be said," Becker said. "That
God, or any other religious sym-
bol or being, shouldn't be
involved. If someone comes and
asks us about [a religious serv-
ice], we'll tell them they should
speak to a spiritual leader."
Other requirements for the
ceremony include at least two
witnesses, and proof of identifi-
cation. For a full list, the bylaw
will soon .be available online,
along with the necessary forms
(but not wedding licenses) at
