County council put the insurance out to tender when its current company warned this year's premium increase will be in the 25 per cent range. What came back were two bids with price tags at $575,873 and $721,047;: The new 9uotes would mean a pre- mium increase of close to 50 and 100 t t year's pre- mium was under $400000 In addition to te higher than expect- ed cost, one of the new bids has a deductible that's five times the cur- rent level the county is paying, while the other matches the current rate but sets a ten times higher level for the coun- ty's adventure park. But Warden Mike Smith isn't ready to call the decision to tender a mistake. "It doesn't hurt to go look at prices," he said, adding he's "a little surprised" at the results. "Compared to what we were pay- ing, it doesn't seem real competitive," he said. Still, the new ten- ders are being eval- uated by a coult- ant and will come back to council this week for a decision. "We'll make the right decision when we get all the .infor- mation," ; Stnith said. Bruce County's current halm' does not have a tender on the table. Treasurer Bettyanne Cobean said a courier prob- lem prevented the bid . getting to the county on time, but a renewal offer is possible depending on the outcome of the tender process. Contracts Bruce County has tentative agree- ments with two unionized employee pups• One contract cov- ers ers 25 full time. and 23 seasonal union- ized employees in the county high- ways department, while 35 parttime library staff are cov- eFfd in a second No details are ming released ratification pioyees, but Warden Mike Smith :pleased • . with the. ntative - agree- ments. "Any time you get an agreement it's nice," he said. The tentative agreements are timely because cur- rent contracts expire Dec. 31, Smith said. "It's a big part of our budget and Dec. 31 is the end of our contract," he said. "We didn't want to go wherever. that may be if we didn't have a contract." Bagnato said the county should help its neighbour, but he wants to know what help West Grey needs and where the money will go. "Certainly when it came up we said 'by all means', but we don't exactly know • what they need now or where it's going," Bagnato said. "We'd like to have that clarified so we can set : the tone for the future." The offer to West Grey's fund came up in response to a request from the Arnprior ansa for a donation to flood relief. Council turned that one down in spite of a plea from South Bruce Peninsula Mayor Gwen Gilbert. She :. argued 'the county should be prepped 1 to help any munici- pality when disaster strikes. "You just never know" when or what kind of emer- gency a municipali- ty could face, she said. Instead Bagnato policy on donations .. to emergency funds. He noted those requests are becom- ing more frequent and said he's "amazed" Bruce County doesn't. have a policy in place to help staff and council respond to the requests. "It would be a lot easier to identify. Staff could go to the policy and say 'it looks like this war- rants some money," Bagnato said. Daytime coyote sightings *are increasingly com- mon, even in the southern part of the county. Bruce, Grey and Huron are the only counties in Ontario that pay a coyote bounty. But treasurer Bettyanne Cobean said bounty is not an issue when there are livestock kills.
