Saugeen Shores
mayor is warden
for Bruce: County
BY PAT HAIPINe
Special to the Sentinel
An unusual last minute
move cleared the way for
Saugeen Shores Mayor
Mike Smith to become
Bruce County warden for
2010.
Kincardine Mayor Larry
Kraemer withdrew after
two tied votes.
In an emotion -choked
voice Kraemer said he's
completing nine years of
continuous service to the
municipality and county,
including leadership in the
nuclear industry and
among nuclear host com-
munities.
"At this point I do not
wish to lead a council 1
have only 50 per cent of the
support of," Kraemer. said.
Kraemer — who noted the
presence of his wife, par-
ents, council members and
municipal staff in the audi-
ence -. was obviously upset
at the turn of events, wip-
ing away tears and holding
his face in his hands.
The unexpected end to
the race for the Warden's
job caught council by sur-
pnse.
"Students you are wit-
nessing history and .a
remarkable moment in
shaping Bruce county,"
Clerk Bettyaniie Cobean
told the class from Mother
Teresa School that attended
the morning session.
The usual ceremony
resumed as,Smith was
declared Waden and led
up to the front by his nom-
inators Ron Oswald and
outgoing Warden Bill
Goetz.

Well known in
Lucknow for his strong
ties to the community and.
a savvy business man,
Donald Campbell
Thompson passed away
on Dec. 2. He will be
missed by many and was
highly regarded for his
dedication to the Lucknow
Sentinel from 1953 until it
was sold to Signal Star
Publishing of Goderich in
1977.
The Sentinel was a big
part of Thompson's life as
it was family owned and
operated for 49 years, with
his . father Campbell
Thompson starting at the
paper in 1928 and taking
over the business in 1941.
Thompson was also assist-
ed at the paper by his wife
Beverley and; his late
mother Margaret. He was
also the publisher of the
Teeswater News for six
years before it was sold to
Keith.Roulston of Blyth in
1975.
Thompson made a lot of
good friends and working
relationships over the
years and one of those
people was Tony Johnston
who worked with
Thompson at the Sentinel
and in the printing busi-
ness for 13. years until the
sale of the Sentinel in
1977.He had a lot of fond
memories of his friend
and employer.
"Don was a super guy
and great to work with. He
was very family oriented,"
said Johnston. "He was
very, community minded
and gave his all to pro-
mote Lucknow.
