Lucknow Sentinel, 2009-12-02, Page 6Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesday, December 2, 2008 - Page 5 Christmas Bureau looking for help Dear Editor, Christmas is around the corner, and the Huron County Christmas Bureau is asking for your help. The Christmas Bureau?s goal is to ensure that all children and their families in Huron County have gifts of new clothing, new toys and food for Christmas. Economic hardships struck many families this year due to the downturn in the economy, and have made it very difficult for many parents to provide food and clothing for their children throughout the year, let alone at Christmas. Without the support of our community, the bureau would not be able to achieve its goal. In the Wingham area, many local businesses, churches and schools already have actions in place to support the Christmas Bureau by having drop boxes for new toys and clothing, angel trees with gift tags and food collection events. Look for drop boxes or gift trees as you go about To the Editor WKS preparing for your Christmas activities. Remember to treat canned food items gently so that tins do not get dented, as damaged canned items cannot be given to our receiving families. Financial gifts are also welcome as they make it possible for The Bureau to buy food vouchers and new cloth- ing loth ing in sizes where donations are lacking. • Volunteers carry out the task of running The Huron County Bureau. These volunteers spend many hours managing and organ- izing and carrying out bureau activities so that needy families in our community experience some Christmas cheer. Gifts of new toys and new clothing and food will be gratefully received at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church Hall on Carling Terrace during the week of December 7th to 1 lth. Volunteers are needed during this week to help collect donations, sort toys and clothing and \ food items. The confidential distribu- tion of gifts to families takes place during the week of December 14th to 17th. This week, volunteers are also needed to help carry gifts for the receiving families. Please . help ensure that there will be Christmas gifts for every child and family in our communi- ty. If you know of a family in need of Christmas help, please have them call the Christmas Bureau at 519.524.7356 between December 1st and 11th. If you would like more information about the Christmas Bureau or would like to volunteer, please contact Susan Hotchkiss, 519.357.2262 or Eileen George, 519.357.3451. Eileen George, Huron County Christmas Bureau Getting the .kids to bed can be a challenge When we were a younger, married couple and had only one child, I often complained about how diffi- cult it was to get the little (ahem) man into bed at the proper time. He was quite excellent at stalling and very imaginative when it came to distracting me from my mission, which was to tuck him in before I went to bed. "Don't worry," my wife assured me. "It can only get easier." This would prob- ably have been true IF WE HAD ONLY HAD ONE CHILD. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, • we now have THREE CHILDREN, two of whom share a bunk bed. Trust me when I tell you, it has not gotten easier. It has only gotten 'different.' Now, instead of one little voice calling out of a darkened bedroom for hours on end, we have TWO little voices arguing, cry- ing, hollering and calling out for hours on end. Plus, as an added bonus, both children take it upon themselves to get OUT of bed and tell us exact- ly what the other one is up to. This definitely puts a damper on the of Romantic Night Life (as do the children them- selves). After six or seven visits from both parties, I get elected to go and 'SETTLE' things. Me: "Son, why are you out of bed again?" My Son: "She poured water on my. bed." Me: "Is that true?" My Daughter: "Yeah, well, he told me to." Me: "If he told you to cut off your toe, would you?" My Daughter: "Ha ha ha! Yes ! " Me: "Did you tell her to?" My Son: "No." Me: "Really?" My Son: "Well, she said "Do you want me to pour water on your bed?" " Me: "And what did you say?" My Son: "I said YES because I. knew that she wouldn't do it." Me: "Apparently you DIDN'T know. Why did she want to pour water on your bed?" My Son: "I don't know." Me: "Why did you want to pour water on his bed?" My Daughter: "Because he said that our friendship was over." Me: "Did you say that?" My Son: "Yeah." Me: "So you knew why she wanted to pour water on your bed." My Son: "Of course." Me: "So. When. I. Asked. You. Why. She. Wanted. To. Pour. Water. On. Your. Bed. Why. Didn't. You, Tell. Me?" My Son: "I don't know." Me (grinding my teeth): "Goodnight!" My Son (to his sister): "NOW our friendship is REALLY over." I know, I know. It can only get easier. Soon, they'll be tucking ME in.
