Grey Bruce From page 1 Grey Bruce Public Health has already sponsored information ses- sions on wind farms and health. But some council- lors noted the health unit's provincial funding means it's not an independent source of research. Bruce County is drafting a `strongly worded letter' to the province calling for an independent study of health issues related to wind turbines. Cultural sector A new . organiza- tion says Bruce County could tap into a share of $200 million .worth of economic activity and 5,000 jobs. National : figures indicate that's the impact of cultural enterprise . in : the two counties, said Paul Conway of the Qrey Bruce Cultural Network. Conway, who owns a story -tiling dinner businessand is also active in the Bruce Peninsula tourist association, is spokesperson for the new Cultural Network. He wants Bruce County's support for the Network's effort to raise the profile of the cultural sector through public pro- motion and a festi- val planned for next year. "We need a pro- motional thing in the largest possible sense. . So we're going to have a fes- tival," he said. "It will be a web festival (called) Festival21." The 21 stands for the 18 municipali- ties, two ,county governments and two First Nations in Bruce and Grey, Conway said. Festival details will be announced in January. The cultural sec- tor includes a broad spectrum and includes a diverse number of small enterprises across Bruce and Grey, Conway said. "We have art gal- leries, we • have artists and perform- ers. We have maga- zines and newspa- pers - those are part of the cultural sec- tor. We have designers of all kinds -- those are part of the cultural sector," he said. Signs Bruce County tourism wants roads departments -- from municipali- ties to the Ministry of Transportation - to pay more atten- tion to signs. The tourism department has county council's approval on a com- prehensive set of guidelines for sign construction and style, and. is ready to overhaul dis- tance and destina- tion signs. The guidelines cover everything from materials that will handle weather conditions to sign placement so that drivers know how far away attractions are and when turns are coming up. "It's a fundamen- tal economic devel- opment tool," Hughes said about signs. "Especially Americans when they come here it's the number one thing they com- plain about - they can't find any- thing." „ "If people can find these things — find the Bruce Trail access points, find the'g trails we know for a fact they are going to stay longer and • they're going to spend money." Signs are as much . a part of the infrastructure as roads, sidewalks, sewers and sheet - lights, . Hughes told county council. That means municipalities and theTransportation Ministry have to include the cost of effective signs in their roads con- struction budgets - something that Huron County Health Unit 519-482-3416 or 1-877=837-6143 HURON www.huroncounty calheaith COUNTY HINI and SEASONAL FLU SHOTS Thursday, December 3 from 3 p.m. - 7 p.m. GODERICH Royal Canadian Legion, 56 Kingston Street Monday, December 7 from 3 p.m. - 7 p.m. EXETER Precious Blood Parrish Hall, 200 Sanders St. West Most doctors' offices and family health teams are offering vaccine for their patients. The province knows there's a problem with poor signs and likes Bruce County's solution, Hughes said. At the same time it is cautious about investing in the project.. The. concern is that other regions will demand the same level of help once they see the success of Bruce County's project, Hughes said. He's adamant that tourist budgets alone shouldn't shoulder the price tag of signs that should be regarded as basic infrastruc- ture. So far Kincardine and Saugeen Shores have com- mitted to use the county's new signs handbook as they upgrade signs in those communities.
