BY ELYSE DEWAR
Kincardine News Staff.
Ripley's Garrett Meurs has upped his
• game once again. This time all the way to
the World Under 17 Hockey Challenge.
Meurs will be one of 22 players fight-
ing to defend the two-year champion-
ship title for Team Ontario.
Meurs was chosen to join Team
Ontario's roster after participating in a
provincial hockey camp in Ottawa in
June.. The top 40 from that camp were
watched by scouts as they entered into
the Ontario Hockey League. From there,
players were picked to play on one of
three Canadian teams in the World
Hockey Challenges.
Team Ontario, along with a Team
Quebec and Team West will all take
on teams from world such as Finland,
Sweden, Czech Republic, Russia and
USA.
Team Ontario will play in a confer-
ence against Team Quebec, Team West,
Finland and Sweden.
Team Ontario will begin their quest for
gold on Dec. 28 with an exhibition game
against Russia and will play their first
game of the round-robin series against
Team Finland on Dec. 29.
The bronze and gold medal games will
be played on Jan. 4. •
Meurs is currently ranked number two
in rookie scoring action in the 0111, and
plays for the Plymouth Whalers.
Although Meurs couldn't be reached
for comment, his mom Tracy said he is
thrilled to join the roster.
"We weren't sure if he was going to
make it, but we were hopeful," she said.
"We're very proud of him and his accom-
plislunent. It's a privilege to be chosen as
one of the top 22 players in Ontario."
