The trip started Sept. 30 and involved 10 days of clinics in remote villages near the city of Iquitos (north east of the capital city of Lima) and along the Amazon river. The nurses treated patients of all ages with a variety of illnesses. The nurses worked in four dif- ferent areas in Peru; El Triunfo, 48 km south of Iquitos, • Febrero 13, 32 km south of Iquitos; Santa Maria Del Ojeal and San Francisco which .were both along the Amazon. The medical team consisted of a physician,• pharma- cist, dentist and 14 nurses. Jean Aitcheson, who is a nurse at the Stratford hospi- tal, is the leader of the medical aid trip. Aitcheson, along with the Stratford Rotary club, has been able to make the con- nections with the rotary club in Peru to set up clinics and to plan the transportation of supplies. One of the most important iteasOns they were there was to provide education to the villagers so they could take care of themselves. The nurses stressed the importance of drinking at least six glasses of clean water a day. They found that most of the people drank only one glass a day on average. "Our frustration was dealing with people and getting them to boil their water so that it's clean to drink," said Gilchrist. "The kids were another story because they drink a lot of sugary type pop instead of good clean water. The problem being that it's what's available and cheap." Gilchrist and Blackwell said their main job was to assess each patient they saw then either deal with them directly or send them to the dentist or doctor if they •needed any special treatment, all the time stress- ing preventive health education. "I think the peo- ple took in the edu- cation we provid- ed, but I think they need their govern-. ment to be more involved," ' said Gilchrist. "At a lot of the places we were, the concept of garbage disposal wasn't there. During the rainy season everything. washes in to the Amazon. Sanitation and drinking Clean water is important for people staying healthy." , Gilchrist and• Blackwell do think they had a positive impact on the peo- ple and the villages they visited and were glad they were given the opportunity to experience it. They also had a lot of fun on the Tuk Tuks (motorcycle carriages) that zoomed around and transported many of the people in the city of Iquitos where they stayed. "We are giving them a boost there. We are giving them a months worth of vitamins," said Gilchrist. "It's something they wouldn't have had before, so it's going to be a boost to their immune system. It is good for them, even in the short period of time we were there."
