Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesday, November 11, 2009 - Page 11 Raymond's foray into French pro hockey has been good experience BY GAR& RFID. "Sentinel staff .- Lucknow native Bobby Raymond's foray into French pro hockey in Strasbourg, France has been an overall good experience. He has :been there since Aug. 11 and it has been a time of adjusting to the lan- guage and the cul- ture, but : Raymond believes he is get- ting the hang of it. Raymond has • played 13 games for the Etoile Nome de Strasbourg (Strasbourg Black `Star) in the ' Ligue Magnus, the top hockey league in France and so far has two goals and four assists. The team's record stands at 6-6-0-1. One of the biggest adjust- ments for Raymond has been the language barri- ers. He said it has been fine in the dressing room, but in the heat of the game, sometimes players revert to their native tongues of French or German. He said that can be a strug- gle especially when hehas to defend the puck in his own end. "On -ice commu- nication is a bit of a struggle because the play is happen- ing so quickly," said Raymond. "It will just take some time .to get used to because my defense partner probably speaks the least amount of English on the team. In time it will get easier, - but sometimes it's dif- ficult for defensive coverage and switching off." tucknow native Bobby Raymond playing for his current team, up he said. • Instead of playing Raymond is- also in just one league Another adjust- ment for Raymond is the .olympic size ice in Europe. Raymond said it's tough to play a physical game because if you make a mistake it's hard to get back into position. Raymond is learn- ing that he has to be patient and let - the play come to him.. It's better to let the opposing team mitke the mistake The schedule is and cough the puck different as well. still getting used to how referees call a game in Europe. Raymond said they call - a lot more obstruction calls, so it's imperative, to play a smart game for the whole 60 minutes. It has also taught him if e he wants to play a physical game he has to :pick the right time. . (Ligue Magnus), where they are cur- rently in . ninth place after six games, Strasbourg also plays in league cup play where they have seven points in six games and are currently in second place. They also play French Cup play where they are 1 0. Hockey is only one part of the experience: for the Strasbourg Black Star Raymond because, he says Strasbourg is a beautiful , city and he's done a lot of sightseeing and his parents Keith and Loree • Raymond, came for a j couple of weeks t9 watch him play and experience for themselves the cul- ture of the area. Raymond said they had a great time. Raymond also had some friends visit him from Lucknow. Sandy SALE CASH AND CARRY CLEARANCE Lougheed and Adam Martin and Raymond had a great time together as they . took the three and half hour trip to Munich where they had the time of their life at Octoberfest. "It's really .nice to have visitors. It gives me that hometown feel- ing," " said - Raymond. . Lougheed and Martin also endeared • • them- selves : • to the Strasbourg hockey fans as they brought along their Canadian brand of cheering - on the teen. "My . friends www.mcintee.ca made lots of noise and the Black Star fans were very appreciative - of that," said Raymond. For Raymond it's been an adjustment period on the ice but it'sbeen a great time for -him on and off the ice. "Anytime we are not winning games, it's always tou but we've picked it up in our last three games and things are 490g good right? ow, said Ranond _ "I've also had a great time outside of hockey with all of the things I've expenenced and seen."
