Operation Christmas Child is back
BY GARIT REID
Sentinel Staff
The Christmas
season is approach-
ing and local groups
and individuals are
working to help
make the season
brighter for another
child around the
world.
"Preparing a shoe-
box gift for
Operation.
Christmas Child is a
great way to provide
some hands-on sup-
port to children in
desperate need,"
said Margy
Wiegersma, local
collection centre
coordinator. "We
may not be able to
hop on a plane or
send large sums of
money or under-
stand the complex
political and eco-
nomicid situations
which they are in but
we can offer this gift
of hope, some
moments of joy: and
sup=
some
piles.
Since 1993, mil-
lions of shoebox
gifts are packed by
people in 11 differ-
ent countries and are
sent to children in
more than 90 coun-
tries.
In 2008, 36
groups from
Lucknow and area
as well as many
individuals filled
1786 shoeboxes. A
total of 716,924
shoe box gifts were
collected . in Canada./
These shoeboxes
were • delivered
around the world
using every foga of
l asportation imag-
inable, from trucks
to boats to planes to
the backs of camels.
Many of the chil-
dren who received
shoeboxes from
Operation
Christmas Child
were given the first
gifts ,they have ever
received.
Operation
Christmas Child is
opening doors for
Samaritan's Purse to
provide children,
families, and com-
munities with access
to safe water, food,
clothing, shelter,
medical assistance,
and educational
resources. Shoebox
gifts collected in
Canada in 2009 will
be sent to countries
throughout South
and Central America
and West Africa.
