Huron Bruce Transit is there to help give a ride
BY GARIT REID
Sentinel Staff
There is a transportation service called.
Huron Bruce Transit situated out of
Wingham that provides people 55 and older
the opportunity to go anywhere they want
in the Huron Bruce area. There is a fee
involved, but the service is capable of tak-
ing people who have various types of
mobility issues where they want to go.
Huron Bruce Transit is a registered non-
profit organization providing transportation
to registered clients to destinations of their
choice hi the area.
The organization began in 1990 as the
North Huron Special Transit Corporation
and operated under the "Wheels Away"
program. In, 2008 the board of directors
decided to change the name to itscurrent
name, Huron Bruce Transit in an effort to
better reflect the area of service.
Payment is de on where the
individual would like to go, but there is flat
rate in Wingham at $4. Huron Bruce Transit
wants to keep things affondable, but do have
to cover costs since they are a not -profit
charitable organization. With that, Ilium
Bruce 'Transit office manager Diane
Grununeft believes it is an important serv-
ice
e vice some people have no option for
transpon in the area. •
"We try to keep things affordable as pos-
sible, but we do have to cover cost," said
Grimunett. k "A lot of older people have no
way of getting where they need to go and
we don't ,just provide rides tomedical v-
:ices, we provide transportation to an

Gr ummett wants to make it easier to get
people where they want to go. She has ideas
like putting up a community billboard in the
office so people can post tide requests and
it would let people know when certain
events are; so they can plan ahead for a ride.
Right now Huron Bruce Transit_ has two
vehicles, one with a ramp and it will fit up
to five people ortwo to three wheelchairs
and a larger vehicle
with a power lift that
can fit four wheel-
chairs and four' pee
ple.
Grummet would
eventually like to . see
the organization grow
into satellite offices in
other towns through-
out the. area, so that
people don't have to
pay to go from town
to town. She would

s.
like to see offices in places hlce Port Elgin,
Kincardine, Goderich, etc with ; their own
vehicles and drivers so ` that the cost is
lower.
One of the .things Grununett and the
organization are trying to convey to people
is they don't have to feel embarrassed to
have to use the service. She wants people to
know they are a professional and caring
service that just want to get their clients to
their destinations safe and on time.
"We are trying to get the stigmatism
away that people don't want to admit that
they need disability transportation," said
Grumrnett. "It's just a good system of trans-
portation that is here to help."
For anyone who wants to book a ride
with Huron Bruce Transit they can call the
office in Wingham at 519-357-4074 and
speak with office manager Diane.
Gninunett.'Ise` office is open from 9 a.m.
12 p.m. Monday through. Friday. People
can also email the Huron Bruce Transit at
of ce@huronb u►cetransit.ca.
