Lucknow Sentinel, 2009-11-04, Page 6HEAT want support for moratoriums
This is a letter that was sent to
the office of MPP Carol Mitchell
From Robert Tetu of Huron East
Against Turbines (HEAT)
In May of this year, local resi-
dents were shocked to see plans
for a wind energy project consist-
ing of 10, two MW, 400 foot tur-
bines proposed for the St.
Columban area. Since that time
our organization has been formed
to stop the project and to educate
'the public about the adverse
'effects of Industrial Wind Turbines
(IWT) and their transmission lines.
While at first we met resistance
at virtually every level of , govern-
ment, we now have the support of
the municipality of Huron East,
the County of Huron, the Huron
County Federation of Agriculture
and the Ontario Federation of
Agriculture. All are calling for a
moratorium on further wind ener-
gy development until a study can
be done to determine the safety of
these projects.
Evidence hasbegun to mount up
from 'local wind farms, from the
US, and from all over the world,
that IWTs create major health
issues, both physical and psycho-
logical, and also, as a result, great-
ly diminish the value of residential
homes in the vicinity of these
"alternative energy sources". The
recent regulations passed within
the. Renewable Energy Act are
completely inadequate to guaran-
tee public safety.
On Oct. 1 and Oct. 6 of this year,
two public information meetings
were held in Owen Sound and
Walkerton, ostensibly to cairn pub-
lic fears about wind farms. It is our,.
understanding that a representative
from your office was in attendance
at Walkerton.
Chaired by Dr. Hazel Lynn,
chief medical officer of health for
Grey 'Bruce and Dr. Ray Copes
from the Ontario Agency for
Health Protection and Promotion,
the meetings were attended by
many wind opponents, including
members of HEAT. As concern
after concern was raised by people
fearful of the proximity. ;of the tur-
bines and, as victims of the' wind
projects told their heart -wrenching
stones, the doctors listened atten-
tively and they too have called for
a moratorium pending a proper
study.
Now it remains for the Ontario
Legislature to stop blocking the
urgentneed fora health study. On
Thursday, Oct. 29, fellow MPP,
Mr. Bill Murdoch, . NMPP for Bruce
Grey Owen Sound :will rise in the
House to present this resolution:
That in the Opinion of this
House, the Prov ince 1 of l Ontario
must impose a moratorium on all
new wind turbine projects in
Ontario until such time . as the
Chief Medical Officer of Health,
Ministry of Health and Ministry of
the Environment have stated that
wind turbines do not have any
adverse health effects on people
who live near them.
We will be in attendance, along
with many other concerned citi-
zens from all over Ontario, and we
urge you to support- your con-
stituents by voting in favour of this
resolution. We will be watching as
you register your vote.

Shopping is a different thing for men and women
When planning a shopping experience, a lot of
women think like this: "I need to buy a pair of jeans
and two blouses but if we pass by the The Body
Shop on the way to Pants R Us I can pick up a few
things for my secret sister." Meanwhile her husband
is thinking, "She told me she has to buy six things.
Only six things. And it will all be over by 4 o'clock.
I once walked a mile with a broken foot. I can
browse through a women's clothing store. I ` can
do this."
Somehow, most shopping experiences end
up like the one below:
My Wife: "Honey, I know you don't like
shopping but we're finished now. Why are
you still grumpy?"
Me: "I'm not grumpy."
My Wife: "Right:"
Me: "I said that I didn't want to
out today. Remember why?"
My Wife: "You hate shopping and
you hate being in malls."
Me: "And you said?"
My Wife: "I said that you and I HAVE to buy
clothes, we have two hours this ` afternoon and the
kids would love to go. We would just go to a few
stores and the mall." •
Me: "So at 4:30, a full THREE HOURS OF
SHOPPING LATER, what had we purchased for
ourselves?"
My Wife: "Well, nothing but..."
Me: "You SAID that we would only be gone for
two hours AND that we had to buy clothes for our-
selves."
My Wife: "That's true, but..."
Me: "There are no "buts" in a V.B.C."
go
My Wife: "A V.B.C.?"
Me: "A Verbal Shopping Contract."
My Wife: "Whatever. The kids were sogood that
I thought we should reward them by going to . the
mall first. You didn't seem to mind at the time."
Me: "Sure, it was okay. The mall has clothing
stores for you and me."
My Wife: "But that wasn't where I wanted toshop
for you and me.
Me: "Of course. Why wouldn't I know that?"
My Wife: "I told you I wanted to go to other
stores.
Me: "You also told me we would be done in
two hours."
My Wife: "I wasn't being serious about
that part. Is that what the problem is?"
Me: "The problem is that we were an
hour over our deadline and we still did-
n't accomplish our mission."
My Wife: "But honey, that's why I
said we could go home:"
Me: "There was no sense in going home if we
weren't done yet."
My Wife: "So are you pouting because we spent
too much time shopping or because we didn't get
anything for ourselves?"
Me: "I'm pouting because you SAID we HAD to
go shopping because we HAD to get clothes and that
we would only be shopping for TWO HOURS. We
didn't get anything for ourselves and we were gone
for THREE HOURS. And I'm not pouting."
My Wife: "Next time I'll just go with my sister."
Me: "Why does this victory feel like defeat?"
