Kathy Rivett, a long time supply teacher for the school, will now take the reigns of the Grade 7 class. With a total of four years supplying in the area and tvvo years in England, Rivett is confident in her abilities to take on a class of her own. Being from Goderich it was an easy choice for her when she was offered the job. It Was decided there would be one Grade 7 class instead of split- ting them up with other grades. • Rivett may be two weeks behind, butshe said with the intelligent and moti- vated class she has, they will be caught up in no time. "The kids in this class are all very friendly and verygood learners," said Rivett. "They are all up for anything. They are big into sports and all sorts of different events. They sign up for everything and with that theyreallygood at are getting caught up in every- thing they take , on. Rivett had a good experi- ence in England in 2003, where she went through 35 schools in two years, in some tough areas. It was a learning curve forher and it taught her to be a better teacherr in what she would say was a lot more hostile of an atmosphere. "They were very rough neighbourhoods and a lot of classes were not very nice, but it made me a better teacher for it," said Rivett. "It was good experience, good for class- room management because the kids were a lot tougher there." ' Rivett is looking to bring all of lier experience to Brookside and she's excited to be 'a part of the teaching staff. She wants to motivate her class to do well, but she knows that will be easy because of the willingness of the students to learn. "I'm a very enthusiastic teacher and I love tocombine art with almost everything that. I‘ teach," said Rivett. "Luckily I have a very drtistic class and they are great readers plus really great listeners. It's easy to teach lessons here when you have a bunch of students who are willing to learn." One of the things any teacher strives to do is prepare their class for the next year. and beyond and it's one thing Rivett feels confident she will accomplish. by. the end of the year. Having supplied numer- ous times for. Grade 8 teacher Mike Beddow, Rivett has a good idea of the tools the stu- dents will need to take into their Grade 8 year. "I know his teaching style and . I think it will make it much easier to prepare the stu- dents next year," said Rivett. Rivett is positive it will be a good year for her and her stu- dents. "I'm very excited. I was kind of nervous at first because I normally teach pri- mary classes, but it's just such a great class that I feel very lucky and comfortable at this school," said Rivett.
