In a unanimous
vote, Brockton
Mayor Charlie
Bagnato • won the
Federal Liberal
nomination for the
Huron -Bruce rid-
ing, which took
place at the
Lucknow
Community Centre,
on Oct. 15.
With a total of
410 votes cast, the
community centre
was filled with
many people from
around the area who
came to support
their nominee. Dr.
Maarten Bokhout
from Clinton, a for-
mer medical officer
of health for Huron
County and Deb
Homuth of Exeter, a
former principal of
Goderich District
Collegiate, were the
other two nominees
seeking election to
the position.
Former Liberal
Huron -Bruce MP
Paul Steckle was on
hand to give his
support to the three
nominees and was
impressed with the
speeches they gave
to support their
campaigns.
"1 thought they
were excellent
speeches. Three dif-
ferent people, bring-
ing three different
perspectives to what
they see for the rid-
ing," said Steckle.
"I thought the
speeches were well
given, well deliv-
ered and well inten-
tioned. I will feel
much better once
the riding is back to
the Liberal party
and any one of these
nominees is capable
of that.
Bagnato was the
eventual winner of
the night and plans
to use his six years
of experience as the
mayor of , Brockton_
to be a 4041144107i.
date for the Liberal
party in 'the next
federal election.
Bagnato, in his
speech, referred to
himself as a lifelong
Liberal and aims to
improve a variety of
issues from agricul-
ture, the environ-
ment, sustainable
energy, Great Lakes
improvement and
the auto sector. One
of the major isues
Bagnato would like
to resolve in the
Huron -Bruce area is
job creation and he
believes improve-
ment in all of the
aforementioned
areas will bring jobs
to the riding.
'The retraining of
people, it isn't really
happening at the.
moment. I think we
should have satellite
Georgian Colleges,
so that people who
have lost their jobs
in Wingham,
Goderich and all
over the area could
be getting courses to
retrain," said
Bagnato. "It would
get them ready for
the new green econ-
omy and I don't see
it . happening right
now and I fear these
people will end up
in Kitchener,
London and
'Toronto because
there isn't enough
work in the area. I
drink that is a key
problem right now."
Bagnato ran a
hard campaign and
he was happy he
landed the nomina-
tion and was
relieved there isn't
an upcoming feder-
al election because
he knows he has to
build on his cam-
paign and get his
message out•ttene.
Bagnato was very
gracious to his fel-
low Liberal nomi-
nees because he
knew how hard

tough campaign. It
really takes a lot out
of you. We worked
10 to 12 hours a day
for five weeks on
phones and knock-
ing on doors from
nine in the morning
e
to` tune at night,"
said Bagnato. "I
think it's also
imperative that . we
(Bokhout and
Homuth) work as a
team, We said at our
last meeting that
whomever lost
would ' help the win-
ner. It's so important
that we ( can cover
