Lancers start off season with a big 12 - 3 win over Crushers
BY GARIT REID
Sentinel Staff
The Lucknow
Lancers started
their season off with
a bang Saturday
night as they took
apart the Shallow
Lake Crushers 12 -
3 in WOAA Senior
A hockey action.
The home opener
saw a bevy of fans
come out to cheer
on their 2009/10
Lancers.
It was all offense
from the start for
the Lancers as they
didn't give the
Crushers a chance
to settle into their
game. A quick goal
in the first minute of
the game started the.
scoring onslau'ght
as the Lancers kept
a barrage of shots
on the Shallow
Lake netminder.
The Lancers
ended the regular
season lastyear on a
good note, with lots
of scoring and hard
work on the puck.
For Mark Stanley
and the rest of team,
they wanted to set
that precedent of .
hard work right in
the first game of the
season. Stanley set
the tone for the
game as he skated
away with four
goals and at' assist.
"Everyone
seemed to be mov-
ing well, everyone
was in shape, the
puck was moving
well andwe just
came out flying,"
said Stanley. "I
think the game was
pretty much .over
after the first."
The score was7 -
1 after the first peri-
od, but that didn't
stop the Lancers
from pouring on the
momentum. One of
the things .that has
been said by players
like captain Ean
Moffat is they don't
want to have a let
down in any period,
so it doesn't allow
the opposing team
to mount a come-
back.
Three more goals
were scored in the
second period and
two more in the
third period to add
insult to injury.
The Crushers did
bring the game to 7
- 4 in the middle of
the second period,
but that's as close as
they got as the
Lancers kept their
scoring consistent
throughout all three
periods.
Shots on net will
be a constant theme
for . the Lancers
going into all of
their games.
Stanley and the rest
of the team know if
they can out shoot
their opponents, it
will give them a
chance to win.
"We didn't spend
a lot oftime in our
own end andwe
were able to move
the . puck out fast,
which was key,"
said Stanley. "We
used a lot of dump
and chase which
allowed us to get - a
lot of pucks on the
net and get up by as
many goals as we
did."

Stanley stressed
the need to play all
three periods of the
game because men-
tally it prepares
them for the next
game. If they. can
play a full 60 min-
utes, Stanley knows
he and -his team
have a chance to
compete with any
team in the league.
"You usually only
play one game a
week so you have to
play all three peri-
ods," said Stanley.
"Next week we play
Elora and they are a
good team, so we
can't let them catch
us flat footed atthe
start of the game."
Stanley was con-
fident in how his
night went as ` his
four goal night
capped off a high
scoring affair for
the Lancers.
"It's always good
to see the puck go in
the feet," said
Stanley. "Last year I
think had 50 shots
before I scored, so it
takes s the monkey
off the back and
anything I can do to
contribute to the
team is great."
As mentioned
before Stanley led
the charge with four
goals and an assist;
Cory Hamilton had
two goals;. Craig
Moffat had two
goals; Rick Andrew
hada goal and an
assist;
Ryan
Murley,TAer Devos
and Kyle Quinn
rounded out the
goal scoring with
one each. Also with
assists were Brad
Robinson with
three; Blake Alton
had two, Luke
Drennan had two,
Brian Stanley, Cal
McDonagh, Brad
Burton, Adam
MacDonald, Rob
McGee and Ean
Moffat had an assist
each.
With the first
game under their
belt the Lancers
will try to go for
two 'straight as they
play the Elora
Rocks Friday, Oct.
23 at 8:30 p.m. in
Elora.
