The Otesha project
recently took a pit stop
in Lucknow to refuel
their bodies and minds
as they have been tour-
ing the ' Great Lakes
regions performing
plays and delivering
their message of sustain-
ability in action.
For people not famil-
iar with the Otesha proj-
ect, it's about finding
workable solutions to
the world's imbalances -
both social and environ-
mental - through more
responsible consumer
behaviour. The aim is to
ensure that the basic
needs of the entire glob-
al community are met by
reducing excess con-
sumption and avoiding
environmental damage.
The Great Lakes Tour
hit the road from Ottawa
on Sept. 7, heading
•south toward Toronto on
their two month adven-
ture of cycling, perform-
ing and world changing.
The tour group of the
Otesha project have
been delivering a their
messages to may of the
high schools throughout
their tour. They per-
formed a play about sus-
tainability at FE Madill
Secondary School on
Oct. 1.
The Otesha group that
came through Lucknow
talked about "being the
change we wish to see".
What they meant by that
is from getting dressed,
to grabbing a coffee, to
transporting people to -
school . , or work, they
know that they can
either be contributing to
child labour, exploita-
tion of people and land,
pollution and climate
change, or they and
everyone else in the
world can contribute to
alternative income proj-
ects, fair trade and sus-
tainable agriculture, and
an emissions -free bicy-
cle culture. The group
said, "the 'change we
make in the world is up
to us."
Theymake the choice
to "walk the talk to
practice more sustain-
able consumption and be
intelligent consumers, to
try to be "morally coher-
ent" in all of their choic-
es
The groups also said,
the mindset is spreading.
A quote from the
Otesha project website
states,"You can see evi-
dence in grocery stores,
sidewalks, public wash-
rooms, coffee shops, and
backyards across the
country, as people every-
where are committing to
being the change they
wish tosee in the
world!"
