Tourism depends on weather From page 2 Tourist operators that count on "ice cream sales and t- shirts'.' depend on the weather and know that risk, Hughes said. Those businesses had a tough season, : ; but the cam- paign to bring in the crowds next season has already begun. Meanwhile Bruce County is still promoting its Adventure Passport .as a guide to low- cost day trips and lesser- known attractions. That program has 13 stops and a contest for significant prizes, and runs until Dec. 5. At last count 28,000 people have used the Adventure Passport to explore the Bruce by car, motorcycle, and bicy- cle and on foot. • Stokes Bay lighthouse Bruce county will airlift a lighthouse to save it from demolition by the federal gov- ernment. County councillors agreed to pay up to $20,000 for a helicopter to lift the light tower at Stokes Bay on the Bruce Peninsula. The rescue mission will lift the lighthouse off its founda- tion and move it, just days ahead of the federal govern- ment's plan to demolish the landmark. The helicopter rescue mis- sion is the only way to get the 105 -year-old landmark off its location on environmentally sensitive land in a provincial park, said tourism manager Chris Hughes. "lt►is crazy and we've got a bit of a reputation in our department of doing things untraditionally.. Saving the lighthouse with a helicopter probably ranks right up there," Hughes said. "But I think it just shows the com- mitment of the county to pre- serving our marine heritage." Councillors were warned earlier this year that the feder- al . government is planning to demolish the historic light tower on Stokes Bay, and that it would move quickly on that project: Crews are on site and work was expected to start this week. That. gave the tourism - department little time to work out details of removing, -stor- ing, stor-ing, and planning the restora- tion of the 1904 landmark. So far there's no decision on where or when the Stokes Bay lighthouse will be rebuilt, but Hughes is confident that when it happens the Stokes Bay lighthouse will become a major tourist attraction. "People will be able to touch it, climb it, hopefully get a vista over Lake Huron again in some location," he said. Hughes was clearly relieved that county councillors were quick to support the project, even though many details remain to be settled. "We'll work can the plans to obviously try and put it in a place and rebuild the way that it was on the shoreline to make it historically accurate," he said. "The number one goal at this point is Awe're just breathing a sigh of relief that we get it on the . ground and into a safe location." The air rescue is a last- minute move to save a part of the county's lighthouse and marine heritage. Bruce County. considers its lighthouses to be important cultural and tourism assets that draw a significant number of visitors almost year round. Continued on page 7
