Lorne Cook (centre right) recently retired from his position as yard manager at the Lucknow
Livestock Assembly Yard, located on .the farm of Don and Lynn Brooks, east of Lucknov.
Lome handed over the keys to new yard manager, Gerd Dale. Lome's retirement ends his 30
years involvement with the Yard. -
Initially when Lorne indicated he would be retiring, and considering the dire straits the pork
and beef industries face, consideration was given to closing the assembly yard due to the
lower numbers coming through the yard. Local farmers showed support to keep it open, so the
tradition that was started in November 1926, when some local farmers started the Lucknow
Assembly Yard,- will continue.
Of particular interest is the fact that this yard was the first "Humane Hog Yard" in the Lucknow
area. Lome and the late Mike Foran got it going. The first shipment was 12 hogs.
Gord is no stranger to hog farming as he did so in his younger years. Following 30 years at
Wescast, Gord nqw looks forward to his new responsibilities.
