"Another Railway Adventure" was a fine time at Grassroots
The multimedia
event "Another
Railway
Adventure" staged
by HAWK Theatre
and Grassroots
Rural Retreat this
past weekend was a
fine time despite the
weather. Saturday's
performance • took
place amidst rain
showers but it didn't
dampen the enthusi-
asm of the actors or
audience.
Roger Morrison
provided a running
commentary on the
route and the histo-
ry of the farms and
railroad in his -role
as the a "Conductor".
The "rail route"
passed through the
Mathers and
Morrison properties
making its way up
onto the old
Listowel to
Kincardine' railway
bed. A distraught
father, Andrew Hill
(Charles Clarke),
stops the train ask-
ing for help to find
his daughter, Ivy
(Lynn Shepherd -
Adamson), who
disappeared after
doing her chores for
several days.
Further along, Allan
Wall (Donald
Andrew), flags
down the train, to
hitch a ride up to the
Wayside Inn to
meet his girl to do
some wedding
planning.
The audience and
Allan are taken by
surprise when they
arrive at the Inn to
find Ivy ready with
a Minister (Murray
Yungblut) and a
wedding just wait-
ing for the groom.
Allan is reluctantly
proceeding with the
wedding when his
future father -in- law
arrives to object.
Some quick think-
ing
king and creative
comments from Ivy
win her father's
consent. And while
the groom may
have felt "like a
steer in a loading
chute" at the start of
the process, he
comes around by
the final moments
of the play. As the
play ends Andrew
Hill leaves feeling
bereft and pursued
by the Inn _Keeper
(Jackie - DeJong)
who thinks this
might be a good
time to console him.
Following the
play the audience
had an • opportunity
to listen .to:' Jacob
Dickie play the fid-
dle and enjoy a
chance to visit with
tie actors and have
light refreshments.
On the return trip -
the conductor told
of train derailments
and farm weddings
that had taken place
along the route.
Blair Morrison
was the engineer
steering the tractor
and wagons along
the route.. Tony
McQuail was the
tour guide and
Vicky Morrison
was the assistant.
Inn Keeper. The
play was written by
Harold Menary and
Gail Vander . Hoek
was: the producer.
