One minute you maybe working like crazyto get • your lawn mowed before it rains and the next minute you are glu- ing the headlight of your minivan back together and asking your son what he THOUGHT would happen when he swung a bat at it. Despite the expenses, the most important thingou as a father can Y do is to encour- age your children to throw themselves into activities that are meaningful, fun and most importantly, take up lots of time The other day I watched my youngest son Benjamin go into the shed with his friend Matthew and grab a piece of plywood (5 minutes). Beingan experienced father, I knew at the very least that this meant I would soon be picking a piece of plywood off of my front lawn. Next, they combed the driveway, the lawn and the cul-de-sac (translation: dead end), picking up rocks of every shape and size (1 hour). This, in itself, made it worth cleaning up the. pieces at a later date. After gathering all the stones they could find, theyset them all on plywood l wood sheet and y labeled them with my sharpie (25 minutes). Finally, they carriedthe board to every house in the neighbourhood, offering their wares to our unsuspecting but wealthy neighbors (1 hour, 15 minutes). This activity had a score of 165 TMD's (Total Minutes Distracted) and I was able to write this column and have a nap! Hurray! Not only that, but the two boys actual- ly sold eight dollars worth of stones! Yes, it's true. The activity that Dad sponsored (by not stopping them and by letting them use all of his stuff) took a long time AND made some pretty sweet coin! I have to give some credit to Ben as well as he was able to actually take plain old stones off of my drive way and get our neighbors to pay real money for them! In fact, he even sweet-talked my wife AND me into "investing" into some "product" we promptly ourselves which p ( p p y returned to the road) (which was promptly returned to the plywood sheet). The highest marks go to Matt, however. Once the money was split up, he got the greater percentage because he was going to give it to his grandparents, who were raising money for Breath Cancer. Health unit asking parents to track illness Health units and school boards in Huron and Perth Counties are asking parents to help track local illness. The Huron County Health Unit, Perth District Health Unit, Avon Maitland and Huron Perth Catholic District School Boards have created a new School Health Monitoring Program. In the past, schools had to report absenteeism due to ill- ness when 10 per cent or more of the student body was ill. The new program, starting Oct. 5, will require all Huron and Perth County schools to report illness each week, regardless of the number of students who are ill. "This will help us to see any trends or patterns among those who are getting sick, especially during the H 1 N 1 and seasonal flu season," said Dr. Nancy Cameron, medical officer of health/chief Executive officer of the Huron County Health Unit. "Having this detailed information will helpmake sure we have the right response g to any outbreak so we can help prevent further spread of illness." "This program is .designed to help us keep a close eye on illness in Perth and Huron .counties," said Dr. Miriam Klassen, acting medical officer of health for Perth County. Parents will be asked to provide a description of they call the their child's illness whenp school to report that their child will be absent. The school will ask the parent to identify whether the child is experiencing: - A respiratory or breathing -related illness (i.e. coughing, sneezing, trouble breathing, sore throat), - A gastrointestinal or stomach -related illness (i.e. vomiting, diarrhea), or - Any other type of illness (e.g. injury, medical appointment). Privacy will be protected because the names of students will not be given when the schools report the information to the health units. 7 s 4 3 5 S 7 8 s 4 9 More at: www,(Qvattspuzzlas.com To solve a Sudoku puzzle, every numbif ... from 1 to 9 must • appear in: • Each of the nine vertical columns • Each of the nine horizontal rows • Each of the nine 3 x 3 boxes • Remember, no number can occur more than once In any row, column or box s 2 This week's puzzle sponaoied by: 1)3 algae *AM Remax Land Exchange Ltd., Brokerage Independently Owned and Operated Mitchell iiwolan Broker 100 Lake Range Drive, Point Clark RR I Kincardine, ON N2Z 2X3 Office: 519-395-0620 Cell 519-955-0664 Email: mitch.twolan@remax-Ix.ca Fax: 519-395.
