Museum to showcase War of 1812
From page 1
Museum exhibit
Bruce County Museum and Cultural
Centre wants to showcase a local link to
the War of 1812.
It plans to stage an exhibit featuring
artifacts from the General Hunter,in
2012, to mark the bicentennial of the ar.
The General Hunter is buried on
Southampton's beach, museum curator
Barb Ribey told county council, and has
been the subject of archeological investi-
gation and considerable public interest.
A former 1812 British Navy brig, it was
captured by the Americans and turned
into a trading ship. It was • during the
General Hunter's career as a trade vessel
that it ended up on the shore at
Southampton.
Ribey's plan is to make the General
Hunter a part of the marine *allery by
showcasing artifacts and creating interac-
tive displays.
Marine heritage groups in
Southampton have an ambitious. plan , to
bring the General Hunter itself to a sepa-
rate new galleryat the museum, but that
project carries a $3 mon price tag.
"I think you won't see that in my life-
time but knowing the people in
Southampton you may see that happen,"
Ribey said.
In the meantime 'the museum has a
grant application to the Rural nicC
Development fund to ` . help with the
General Hunter 2012 proms.
New exhibit
Ancient Sea Monsters are coming to
the Bruce County Museum and Cultural
Centre next 'summer. .
The display is from the same company
that created the ma mals of the ice age
and the recent dinosaur exhibit. That
exhibit drew crowds in record-breaking
numbers.
"We're happy with the company's track
record," curator Barb Ribey said about
the Texas-based company that makes the
robotic creatures.
The display of six ancient sea creatures
ties in with the museum's geology gallery
and the area's crustaceous and Devonian
eras.
They're going to be bringing in drag-
ons. One (exhibit) is mythical, one is sci-
entific so we can have a lot of fun with
our marketing and programming," Riney
said.
Ancient monsters of the Sea will run at
the Bruce County Museum ancl Cultural
Centre from the end of April through.
August 2010.
Child care
A late infusion of provincial grant
means Bruce county social services can
top up supplies for its child care program.
The $380,000 grant arrived well into
the second ,half of the fiscal year, but
Director : Terry Sanderson said it will be
put to good use.
"Making sure there's enough papers,
crayons, books, expanding our child toy
library . and so on to make sure we can
provide ' the services that kids need,"
Sanderson said about how the money will
be spent:
A late -in -the -year grant is not unnexr-
pected for the child care department. The
province doles out an extra grant almost
every year, but Sanderson said the prob-
lem is the timing and amount is unpre-
dictable.
"We never know until June if it's going
to come. If you don't know you can't
budget in advance because you could be
off by $380,000," he aid.
