The Purple Grove Institute
meeting was held recently with
Cheryl Bridge as hostess, Joyce
Farrell as president and Janet
Nixon being secretary. Shirley
MacDonald read the Scripture.
The group discussed the
upcoming Ripley Fall Fair as well
as the area convention to be held
in October in Keady.
Fran Farrell introduced the
guest speaker, Roger Thomson.
Put* Gro
MI The w•aes's Institute
Roger spoke on his trip to
Tanzania where he helped the
people build schools and started
them raising Rhode Island hens.
In the area, you are considered
rich if you have cows and a few
hens. The people in the area sell
hayand grow rice, fruit trees and
lots of banana trees. The teachers
get a small salary and, if lucky, a
hut to live in. It costs $140 to send
a boy to high school and most
cannot afford this amount. Water
is scarce. The farmers take their
cows to a reservoir to drink. The
ladies enjoyed Roger's talk and
found it very educational.
The meeting ended with lunch
being served by BettyNeedham
and Mary Anne Kukoly.
